Comics Should Be Cheap! (8/24/2016)

Buying comics can be an expensive hobby. A lot of fans simply can’t afford everything they’re interested in, due to rising prices and the over-saturation of the market with superhero titles.

That’s why we’re here. Every week, the Multiversity staff is asked “What would you buy this week if you couldn’t go over $20?” and shares their reasons why, in order to help others who might have similar tastes make their own decisions in buying comics on a budget. Be sure to leave your own picks in the comments!

Leo’s Picks:

Lake of Fire #1 ($3.99) – There were only a few books announced at the most recent Image Expo that actually seemed like genuinely interesting and must have books for me. One was “Horizon” and another was “Lake of Fire”. The mix of a historical setting, aliens, sci-fi, and some killer looking art is basically all I need to pick up the book.

Chew #57 ($3.99) – “Chew” is almost over. Truly one of the best comics of the last several years. I can’t wait to see how Layman and Guillory close it out and bring all the weird, heartbreaking stuff from the last 50+ issues to a nice end.

Invincible #130 ($2.99) – It was recently announced that “Invincible” is going to come to an end sometime next year. It’s weird to know that it’s ending, given that it’s been a pretty regular staple of the Image lineup for over a decade, but it’s also good to know that Kirkman and Ottley want to tell a story with a finite end. As Mark heads back to Earth, and likely some sort of confrontation, I’m ready to see Kirkman and Ottley set up their end game.

Atomic Robo and the Temple of Od #1 ( $3.99) – It’s “Atomic Robo”. You always get “Atomic Robo”.

Total: $14.96

Vince’s Picks:

Blue Beetle: Rebirth #1 ($2.99) – Here’s a place where the rubber really meets the road when it comes to legacy in DC Rebirth. How are Ted Kord and Jaime Reyes going to be handled going forward? Of the old guard, Keith Giffen has traditionally had the highest highs, but also some low lows in the post-Flashpoint era, so this book could easily go any of a number of ways.

Duck Avengers #0 ($4.99) – I’m a sucker for anything Scrooge McDuck. And this? This sounds bonkers.

Atomic Robo and the Temple of Od #1 ($3.99) – I’m always here for new Atomic Robo.

Snot Girl #2 ($2.99) – Another very affecting series from Bryan Lee O’Malley, with gorgeous pop art from Leslie Hung. Don’t let the title gross you out.

Total: $14.96

Matt’s Picks:

Island #10 ($7.99) – There are some great cartoonists in this issue, including Farel Dalrymple, Gael Bertrand, and Fil Barlow. Support great cartoonists, everyone.

Mama Tits Saves the World ($5.00) – This offering from Northwest Press finds the titular Mama on a crusade against bigotry and injustice, spurred by the powers of a queer pantheon. Scripted by Zan Christensen with art by Terry Blas, it seems like a fabulous time.

She Wolf #3 ($3.99) – Here’s Rich Tommaso’s fever dream horror story. I’m letting the issues stack up before I dive into the whole thing, but that doesn’t make them any less awesome to mull over.

Total: $16.98

Ken’s Picks:

Generation Zero #1 ($3.99): Oh, it’s finally here! I have been wanting to see this group from Valiant get a series ever since “Harbinger Wars” back in 2013. A fascinating group of teens that are not going to take the crap hand life dealt them anymore. Having already read this, it’s an interesting direction that Fred Van Lente and Francis Portella are taking them, but I’m willing to keep going.

Detective Comics #939 ($2.99): Not gonna lie, that preview is making me nervous that I’m about to add another writer to my ever-growing list of those that use the lazy trope of teen death. Hope that’s not the case.

Total: $6.98
