Comics Should Be Cheap (9/15/21)

Buying comics can be an expensive hobby. A lot of fans simply can’t afford everything they’re interested in, due to rising prices and the over-saturation of the market with superhero titles.

That’s why we’re here. Every week, the Multiversity staff is asked “What would you buy this week if you couldn’t go over $20?” and shares their reasons why, in order to help others who might have similar tastes make their own decisions in buying comics on a budget. Be sure to leave your own picks in the comments!

Mark’s Picks:

Primordial #1 ($3.99) – What a stunning first issue! After their fantastic work on “Gideon Falls,” Jeff Lemire and Andrea Sorrentino reunite for “Primordial,” set in a universe where the space race stumbled in the late 1950s. I won’t say more than that, as part of the fun is seeing all this unfold. Graphically, Sorrentino, along with Dave Stewart and Steve Wands, are going all out. This was an absolute pleasure to read.

Hellboy and the B.P.R.D.: 1957 — Family Ties ($3.99) – Laurence Campbell returns to the Hellboy Universe for a one-shot story. That alone makes this a title to pick up.

The House of Lost Horizons: A Sarah Jewell Mystery #5 ($3.99) – Our first major Sarah Jewell mystery comes to an end. As a fan of the character, I have to get this one.

Time Before Time #5 ($3.99) – Another end of sorts, though this one is just the end of an arc with a big cliffhanger and the letters column promises much more on the way. If you’ve been reading Declan Shalvey, Rory Mcconville, and Joe Palmer’s “Time Before Time” monthly, this is a good excuse to revisit the previous issues and do a big reread of them all.

Compass #4 ($3.99) – I’m not up to date with this series. I’ve only just started issue #1, but I’m digging it so far. It’s one of those comics that packs the end with a bunch of special features, like research details from the creative team, which adds to my enjoyment immensely.

Total: $19.95. Very unsurprising picks from me, I know.

Johnny’s Picks:

Canopus TP ($14.99) – I had a lot of fun with this four issue mini-series from cartoonist Dave Chisholm – the same creative force behind the fantastic Charlie Parker OGN that came out last year, “Chasin’ The Bird.” This is pure science-fiction, and my favorite kind that dabbles in the metaphysical, as a ship-wrecked astronaut scrambles to find components to repair her ship, while also dealing with sinister manifestations from her past. This book had big Jeff Lemire vibes, and I dug it. It will be interesting to revisit in one sitting.

Primordial #1 ($3.99) – Speaking of Jeff Lemire, he’s got his own high-concept book out this week from Image, and another with longtime collaborator Andrea Sorrentino. This book reminds me of the silly movie The Day of the Dolphin, the tagline of which is “Unwittingly, he trained a dolphin to kill the President of the United States.” Based on a real world event, this book anchors the plot around two monkeys sent into space by the United States during the Cold War, and I’m very curious how Lemire writes a Cold War spy thriller. Plus, I’m gonna be honest, I just like monkeys.

Total: $18.98. DC has a slew of good titles this week out too, most notably a Jessica Cruz OGN by writer Lilliam Rivera that I’m excited to pick up.

Kate’s Picks:

Primordial #1 ($3.99): I love a good space race story, and Jeff Lemire is going to give this just the right sci-fi touch.

Maw #1 ($3.99): In light of recent events in the state of Texas, this series – – written by feminist journalist and author Jude Ellison S. Doyle – – will prove a provocative and fascinating read.

20 Fists ($9.99): What if Fight Club but add in some romance?

Total: $17.97

Christopher’s Picks:

Fantastic Four #35 ($9.99) – Happy birthday to Marvel’s First Family! What’s that? Every version of Kang the Conqueror is out to destroy you? Well that’s just typical. And Mark Waid’s written a back-up story? Well, how can I say no to that?

Savage Hearts #3 ($3.99) – This is a funny series, and judging from the preview we ran yesterday, it’s about to get even racier.

Total: $13.98
