Comics Should Be Cheap! (9/19/2018)

Buying comics can be an expensive hobby. A lot of fans simply can’t afford everything they’re interested in, due to rising prices and the over-saturation of the market with superhero titles.

That’s why we’re here. Every week, the Multiversity staff is asked “What would you buy this week if you couldn’t go over $20?” and shares their reasons why, in order to help others who might have similar tastes make their own decisions in buying comics on a budget. Be sure to leave your own picks in the comments!

Mark’s picks:

“Black Hammer: Age of Doom” #5 ($3.99)— This is the issue we’ve been waiting for. Yeah, there’s a lot of answers to big questions, but more importantly there’s context. This revisits a lot of moments from earlier in the series and lets us see them anew. And then… uncharted territory.

“Flavor” #5 ($3.99)— I love ths comic, but I really need to find a good crêpe restaurant to go to after I finish each issue. I simply can’t stop thinking about Crêpes Suzette…

“Witchfinder: The Gates of Heaven” #5 ($3.99)— Man, “Witchfinder” always ends too soon. Hopefully it won’t be another two years for the next one…

“Rumble” #7 ($3.99)— Simply put, this arc of “Rumble” is unlike any other. The usual darkness of the series is stripped away… and like Cogan, I’m waiting for the other shoe to drop.

Total: $15.96 – The remaining $4 goes towards crêpes.

Justin Beeson’s Picks:

“The Amazing Spider-Man Annual” #1 ($4.99) – Saladin Ahmed may be taking over Miles Morales in a couple months, but I’m excited to see what he does with Peter Parker and the symbiote suit.

“Batman” #55 ($3.99) – I have a feeling I’m going to be very angry with Tom King after what he does to Nightwing in this issue, but it’s definitely a must-read to see where that character is going in the near-future.

“Batman: Damned” #1 ($6.99) – I don’t necessarily need to see what Bruce Wayne’s penis looks like, but apparently here we are.

“Mister Miracle” #11 ($3.99) – I can’t believe this series is almost over, but I can’t wait to find out WTF is actually going on.

Total: $19.96. The Big 2 are really monopolizing my wallet this week.

Kate’s Picks:

“Pearl” #2 ($3.99)— This was the first of the new Jinxworld titles I read, and it certainly hit the ground running. Can issue #2 live up to the pace of its debut?

“Burnouts” #1 ($3.99)— The concept is so ridiculous (teenagers that can save the world but only while high) it just might work. (Meanwhile kids, remember what Deadpool says: hugs not drugs.)

“Batman: Damned” #1 ($6.99)— The first of the DC Black Label books. Is it worth the $7 price tag? Could Batman BE any darker? (If you read that in your best Chandler from Friends voice the joke is even funnier.) Plus there are rumors that we see a LOT more of Batman than I think anyone expected, so color me intrigued.

“Harley Quinn” #50 ($3.99)— I’m not a regular reader, but we’ve been revealing several artists participating in this issue and I’m interested enough to see their respective takes on Ms. Quinn.

Total: $18.96. “Batman: Damned,” you better be worth it.

Nick’s Picks:

“Skyward,” Volume 1 ($9.99)— It’s been a minute since I’ve gotten excited over a new Image series. This book’s mix of personal favorite artist (Garbett’s Batgirl was an early favorite when I was getting into comics), odd concept, and positive tone drew me in. And you can’t beat a $9.99 first volume!

“Black Badge” #2 ($3.99)— The first issue intrigued me. I’m ready to dig deeper into this world.

“Black Hammer: Age of Doom” #5 ($3.99)— Revelation time.

Total: $17.97.

Vince’s Picks:

“The Wild Storm” #17 ($3.99)— The best book DC is putting out on the stands. Warren Ellis at the top of his minimalist, cinematic game and Jon-Davis Hunt doing exquisite action work that will keep him on the shortlist of my most treasured working artists.

“Batman: Damned” #1 ($6.99)— Bababooey bababooey Bruce Wayne’s penis bababooey

Total: $10.98
