Buying comics can be an expensive hobby. A lot of fans simply can’t afford everything they’re interested in, due to rising prices and the over-saturation of the market with superhero titles.

That’s why we’re here. Every week, the Multiversity staff is asked “What would you buy this week if you couldn’t go over $20?” and shares their reasons why, in order to help others who might have similar tastes make their own decisions in buying comics on a budget. Be sure to leave your own picks in the comments!

Mark’s Picks:

Life of Melody ($15.99) – I’m intrigued by this story of someone that takes on the duty of parenthood for purely utilitarian reasons and then grows into being a real parent. It’s all wrapped up in magic and fairy tales and unlikely couples, but that core element really has me on the hook. And it doesn’t hurt that Mari Costa’s art is so endearing.

The Golem Walks Among Us! #2 ($3.99) – I liked The Golem Walks Among Us! #1—it was good—but issue #2 makes it great.

Total: $19.98. This week the CSBC limit was particularly tough. I also wanted to pick up “Parasomnia” #4 from Cullen Bunn and Andrea Mutti and “Verse – Book 1: The Broken Half,” the first of a trilogy by Sam Beck. (Fitting in one OGN is hard enough, but two is impossible, I’m afraid.)

Christopher’s Picks:

Stranger Things: Tomb of Ybwen #1 ($3.99) – Wouldn’t you know, I just finished covering season two for the Summer TV Binge, and now it’s time for Greg Pak and Diego Galindo’s miniseries exploring the aftermath. I really enjoyed the ST graphic novel Pak wrote, and I already love that this one is specifically seeking to evoke the Goonies influence on the series.

Scarenthood ($15.99) – From American kids having spooky adventures to Irish parents having spooky adventures, I am very keen to finally read Nick Roche and Chris O’Halloran’s horror series: I love Nick’s art, it’s so cartoony and expressive, and hopefully this’ll be scary but not too scary.

Total: $19.98

Johnny’s Picks:

Inferno #1 ($5.99) – The End is the Beginning is the End…welp, while it’s a super-bummer we didn’t get to see a full follow-through on the execution of Hickman’s grand design for his X-Men tenure, we got some really tremendous highs along the way. I got introduced to writers Tini Howard and Vita Ayala, Kate Pryde hasn’t been this interesting in decades, and mutants are again a force to be reckoned with in the Marvel Universe. Valerio Schiti’s art in this first issue is absolutely stunning, so with bittersweet bombast let Hickman’s end game commence!

Echolands #2 ($4.99) – I fell asleep at the wheel and completely missed the first issue of this, but after finally peeping that issue digitally, I will be marching straight to my LCS to drop off some dollars for issue #2 in its physical form and glory. Williams, Stewart, Klein, and Blackman together are making one gorgeous looking fantasy comic, as I should have expected.

The Good Asian #5 ($3.99) – My favorite read, month to month. I love a great detective yarn, and this has been an absolutely riveting piece of genre work, courtesy of writer Pornsak Pichetshote and artist Alexandre Tefenkgi.

Total: $14.97. I’ll also be picking up the new “Head Lopper” trade (volume 4) – another consistently favorite read!

Kate’s Picks:

My Wife Has No Emotion Vol. 1 ($12.99): This story of a robot-human relationships will be right up your alley if you’re a fan of anything from “Alex and Ada” to “Chobits” to A.I. Artificial Intelligence. (Am I the only person that liked that movie? Probably.) The relationship is a romance, which is a trope we’ve seen before, so hopefully this story can try something different.

Firefly River Run #1 ($7.99): River Tam’s story certainly had enough unanswered questions after the end of the original Firefly TV series, so I’m happy to see her get some new life in this one-shot.

Total: $20.98
