Every year, we reach out to some of our creator pals to ask them what they thought of the year that was. This year was no different. Keep reading to find out what some of the most talented folks in all of comics dug this year in our Creators’ Year in Review, Part 2.

Who, to you, were among the best writers this past year?

Mike Norton (“Revival,” “Grumble”): I’m really excited with the artists that are writing this year. Daniel Warren Johnson, Rob Guillory. It’s encouraging to see so much good stuff. Of course Tom King is killing it, too.

Dylan Meconis (“The Long Con,” “Bitch Planet: Triple Feature”): Jillian Tamaki receives a great deal of well-earned praise for her visual work, but not nearly what she deserves for her writing. I was very pleased that her collection of shorts, “Boundless,” received good attention.

Liana Kangas (“Black AF: Devil’s Due,” “2000 AD Sci-Fi Special”): Vita Ayala is taking comics by storm. They introduced me to some of my other favorite writers like Matthew Erman who wrote “Long Lost,” Erica Schultz, Joe Corrallo and Pat Shand – who I am honored to have collaborated with as well. Also Scott Bryan Wilson, because he’s crushing it.

Steve Orlando (“Martian Manhunter,” “Electric Warriors”): A ton of great work hit this year! Vita Ayala, Alex Paknadel, Si Spurrier, Tini Howard, Ryan Cady, David Walker, Eliot Rahal and so many more have delivered and overdelivered in 2018. Hard to list them all, it was a great year in comics!

Andy Hirsch (“Science Comics,” “Varmints”): I think Kyle Starks really stuck the landing with this year’s finale to “Rock Candy Mountain.” If you ask me, it’s his best work to date and manages to pull off the trick of being both sweet as well as hilariously violent and vulgar. Plus he continues his streak of coming up with the best names in comics (see: Dakota Horseshit).

Ben Coleman (“The Long Con”): Paul Tobin continues to be the hardest working writer in comics, and that’s not even counting his Twitter feed. Joëlle Jones has really come into her own as a top level writer these last few years, and it’s been neat to see her work on the massive canvas that DC offers. I would also be negligent not to mention my co-writer, Dylan Meconis, who has been a real delight to work with and has been toiling away on her next project, “Queen of the Sea.” which I’m very much looking forward to.

Ron Marz (“Michael Turner’s Fathom,” “Dread Gods”): Ed Brubaker, Jason Aaron, Ram V, Tom King.

Tadd Galusha (“Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles/Ghostbusters,” “Bubba Ho-Tep and the Cosmic Blood Suckers”): Mark Waid’s “Captain America” run with Chris Samnee was exceptional this year. It took me back to my childhood and made me remember why I love comics.

    In Memoriam: Stephen Hawking

    By | Dec 31, 2018 | Columns

Space. The possibilities are unimaginable. Theoretical physics and pop culture. It seems there is very little, really basically nothing, that joins these two, but there is a man that spent a good part of his life involved in both: Stephen Hawking. Maybe he spent more time with theoretical physics, but bear with me here. To […]
