Buying comics can be an expensive hobby. A lot of fans simply can’t afford everything they’re interested in, due to rising prices and the over-saturation of the market with superhero titles.

That’s why we’re here. Every week, the Multiversity staff is asked “What would you buy this week if you couldn’t go over $20?” and shares their reasons why, in order to help others who might have similar tastes make their own decisions in buying comics on a budget. Be sure to leave your own picks in the comments!

Johnny’s Picks:

X-Cellent #1 ($3.99): Not sure if this is Milligan and Allred’s last ride with these characters or not, but I will always be energized by this oddball take on Marvel’s mutantkind. Allred’s character designs for these goofy, kitschy characters are among my favorites in all of Marvel, and while Milligan’s take on mutants as celebrated pop stars seems to stretch further an further away from actual Marvel continuity, the book is never lacking in being the great kind of WEIRD that I want from my superhero books.

Black Cloak #3 ($3.99): I’ve really enjoyed the sci-fi/fantasy genre-mashing McClaren and Thompson are going with in “Black Cloak.” It’s clear that Image juggernaut “Saga” is a heavy influence, but the creators of this book are expertly crafting a sandbox to play in all on their own. McClaren has a wonderfully playful style that keeps the murder investigation at the heart of the story from getting too dark, but Thompson clearly has a multi-layered plot in mind, so I’m curious where this book goes!

Total: $7.98

Christopher’s Pick:

Colin Kaepernick: Change the Game ($14.99): So, without trying to be controversial and hyperbolic, Colin Kaepernick is probably the most important American athlete since Muhammad Ali right? I’ll never say now to an autobiography in comics form, and their book, written with Eve Ewing and drawn by Orlando Caicedo, exploring when he decided to change from baseball to football in high school, ought to be a good companion to the TV series Colin in Black & White.

Total: $14.99

Kate’s Picks:

Art Brut #4 ($3.99): Jump through 20th century art styles in the finale to this miniseries that entertained you and probably taught you a bit about art along the way.

Multiversity Harley Screws Up The DCU #1 ($4.99): Harley Quinn plus a time machine has the potential to be disaster for the DCU, but wildly entertaining for the rest of us!

Total: $8.98
