Buying comics can be an expensive hobby. A lot of fans simply can’t afford everything they’re interested in, due to rising prices and the over-saturation of the market with superhero titles.

That’s why we’re here. Every week, the Multiversity staff is asked “What would you buy this week if you couldn’t go over $20?” and shares their reasons why, in order to help others who might have similar tastes make their own decisions in buying comics on a budget. Be sure to leave your own picks in the comments!

Christopher’s Pick:

The Witches of World War II ($16.99): Paul Cornell’s latest graphic novel, featuring art by Valeria Burzo and colors by Jordie Bellaire, reimagines the occultists who lived during the Second World War as being recruited to use their knowledge by British intelligence. Can never say no to a bit of Nazi bashing, plus mixing in real-world magicians? And Cornell writing the Wickedest Man in the World, Aleister Crowley? Consider me intrigued.

Total: $16.99

Johnny’s Picks:

Blab! Vol 1 ($19.99): For those of you with more adventurous spirits, or wishing to pull your tastes into the more experimental or eclectic worlds of comics, look no further! This week, Dark Horse pulls this Harvey award winning anthology series out of retirement for another run. Mixing fiction and nonfiction with an emphasis on style and design, previous volumes of this series have included some indie giants as Chris Ware, Dan Clowes, and Charles Burns. This issue features stories by Noah Van Sciver, and Ryan Heshka profiles the rise and fall of Siegel and Shuster, creators of Superman! I love a good anthology, and Blab! has historically been one of the best.

Dungeons & Dragons: Saturday Morning Adventures #2 ($3.99): I had to blow the $20 cap to celebrate this gem of a book. Artist George Kambadais injects a ton of energy into these nearly 40 year old cartoon characters with a playful style that makes them more dynamic and interesting than the cartoon ever did. If you like your D&D on the lighter side of fun, you should give this book a shot!

Total: $23.98

Kate’s Picks:

Money Shot Comes Again #1 ($4.99): Space sexytime is back!

Deep Cuts #1 ($5.99): I’m on a jazz kick of late since I just saw our local theater’s production of Ain’t Misbehavin (which if you don’t know is a musical revue of jazz legend Fats Waller’s songs). And there’s something about the improvisational nature of jazz that lends itself to horror. Throw in a New Orleans setting, and you can’t go wrong.

Image 30th Anniversary Anthology #12 ($5.99): This is the last issue of this celebration miniseries, which has been a fun and easy way to see the breadth and depth of Image talent.

W0rldtr33 #1 ($3.99): The title is enough to make you stop and look, and it’s probably going to make me feel old with the nostalgia for my high school/college years of the 1990s, but early computing stories have some life – – look at Halt and Catch Fire after all. James Tynion knows what he’s doing, so I’m along for the (56k modem) ride.

Total: $20.96
