Comics Should Be Cheap (5/11/22)

Buying comics can be an expensive hobby. A lot of fans simply can’t afford everything they’re interested in, due to rising prices and the over-saturation of the market with superhero titles.

That’s why we’re here. Every week, the Multiversity staff is asked “What would you buy this week if you couldn’t go over $20?” and shares their reasons why, in order to help others who might have similar tastes make their own decisions in buying comics on a budget. Be sure to leave your own picks in the comments!

Mark’s Picks:

Tales from Harrow County: Lost Ones #1 ($3.99): Every now and then there comes a story that takes the world of a comics series and opens it up to something much bigger and more complex. That’s what ‘Lost Ones’ is. We already had a bit of this sort of thing in the previous arc, ‘Fair Folk,’ but ‘Lost Ones’ takes it to a whole other level. Not only does it open up the world for future stories, it casts all those before it in a new light. It also features the return of some fan-favorite characters. Simply put, this is not an issue to be missed.

The Oates & the Elphyne ($14.99):I already enjoy Michael Walsh’s work, but this is definitely a bit of a departure from the usual for him, especially when compared to his “Silver Coin” work. All it took was a recent podcast to convince me.

Total: $18.98.

Kate’s Picks:

Eight Billion Genies #1 ($3.99): The first lesson of magic is that it always comes with a price, and while that often has a sinister undertone to it, this series takes that concept from a fun angle. All hell breaks loose when everyone on earth has their own personal genie and one wish. Let the craziness begin.

Archie Meets Riverdale #1 ($3.99): Archie meets Archie and it doesn’t get any more Riverdale than this. What happens when the goofy Archie comes face to face with his serious side, and vice versa?

Peanuts It’s a Dog’s Life Charlie Brown ($7.99): The Peanuts stories were a backbone of my childhood, and I’m always glad to have a new collection to introduce the younger generations to these timeless classics (and for me to feel like a kid again).

Total: $15.97. There’s also a lot of Image Firsts out this week, including “Astro City” and “Paper Girls,” and at only $1 each, they’re easy to squeeze into your budget.

Christopher’s Picks:

Avatar: Adapt or Die #1 ($3.99): Did you see that gorgeous Avatar: The Way of Water trailer in front of Multiverse of Madness? Wowsa. In the meantime, I look forward to revisiting Pandora with Dark Horse’s latest miniseries, which explores the backstory of Sigourney Weaver’s character. I loved writer Corinna Bechko’s work with the Planet of the Apes comics, so this should be a similarly mature and solid prequel.

Batman vs. Bigby! A Wolf in Gotham ($19.99): I don’t think Bill Willingham and I have anything much in common, and any conversation between us would get very volatile. That said, I love “Fables,” and I’m very interested to see how he has folded in superheroes into his and Mark Buckingham’s lovely shared universe.

Total: $23.98 – oops.

Johnny’s Picks:

Captain America Symbol of Truth #1 ($4.99) – It’s R.B. Silva’s slick art throughout this action-packed comic that drew me in, but hopefully writer Tochi Onyebuchi can keep me attentive to the exploits of Sam-Wilson-as-Cap for longer than the first issue.

X-Men #11 ($3.99) – You had me at Mojo. Duggan and Larraz take some of the X-Ladies on a whirlwind tour of Mojo’s Gameworld (now under the control of intergalactic gangster Cordyceps Jones), and hijinks will, of course, ensue.

Eight Billion Genies #1 (of 8) ($3.99) – What if we all woke up tomorrow and had one wish available to each of us? Sounds like an instant recipe for disaster, one served up deliciously and hilariously by the pairing of “Curse Words” collaborators Ryan Brown and Charles Soule.

Image Firsts ($1.00) – My running total so far is $12.97, so I thought I’d recommend a few books from the newest batch of Image Firsts reprints available this week! “East of West”, “Paper Girls”, “Descender”, “Astro City”, “Monstress”, “Radiant Black”, and “The Wicked & The Divine” all get very affordable reprints to their first issues, and are a great way to introduce yourself to a new series, or as a gift encouraging someone else to check out a book you love!

Total: $19.97. I’m also going to snag that expensive-but-worth-it “Mike Mignola’s Hellboy In Hell & Other Stories: Artisan Edition” because I’m a sucker for his amazing art.
