Buying comics can be an expensive hobby. A lot of fans simply can’t afford everything they’re interested in, due to rising prices and the over-saturation of the market with superhero titles.
That’s why we’re here. Every week, the Multiversity staff is asked “What would you buy this week if you couldn’t go over $20?” and shares their reasons why, in order to help others who might have similar tastes make their own decisions in buying comics on a budget. Be sure to leave your own picks in the comments!

Johnny’s Picks:
Doom #1 ($6.99): Let’s start off with that price tag – $6.99 for a 56 page comic – I really shouldn’t be recommending this. The Hickman Tax is real, and Marvel continues to price his stuff as high as they want because we’re all willing to pay that much for quality comics (which maybe says something about the general quality of Marvel books overall, really). COMICS SHOULD BE CHEAP, dangit. That’s why we’re here. Saying that, Jonathan Hickman is joined on this book by one of my favorite all-time underrated comic artists – Sanford Greene, a name who has been around for some time, and deserves his accolades. His art is dynamic and infused with a style that – while maybe reminiscent of guys like Paul Pope, remains all his own. “Bitter Root”, his previous project, is a tremendous work, a fantasy comic that examines the festering rot that is the very real inherited racism at this country’s core. While that book was monster-centric, it will be nice to see Green jam out on some cool interdimensional spreads, as DOOM and Valeria Richards do some fun dimension-hopping in this One-Shot. Knowing Hickman’s penchant for writing Doom, and knowing Sanford Green’s artistic chops, this could be a classic in the making right here!
Total: $6.99 – Yep – you know what – “Bitter Root Vol. 1” is sitting at 10-12 bones out there, use your extra scratch to go pick up the first chapter to that outstanding series, and learn why I love Greene so much, and why you should too!

Kate’s Picks:
Godzilla 70th Anniversary Special ($9.99): Happy 70th Birthday, King of the Monsters, and you don’t look a day over 45.
Ice Cream Man #39 ($3.99): Hooray, this series is back – and with a wibbly wobbly timey wimey story that seems to pull influences from a 1971 film called Duel directed by some dude named Steven Spielberg.
Briar #5 ($3.99): It’s a new story arc for this alternate and feminist take on Sleeping Beauty, and as I’m currently watching Halt and Catch Fire let’s keep the Christopher Cantwell train going.
Total: $17.97
