Buying comics can be an expensive hobby. A lot of fans simply can’t afford everything they’re interested in, due to rising prices and the over-saturation of the market with superhero titles.

That’s why we’re here. Every week, the Multiversity staff is asked “What would you buy this week if you couldn’t go over $20?” and shares their reasons why, in order to help others who might have similar tastes make their own decisions in buying comics on a budget. Be sure to leave your own picks in the comments!

Mark’s Picks:

Manor Black: Fire in the Blood #4 ($3.99): What a great issue. Cullen Bunn, Brian Hurtt, and Tyler Crook are all firing on all cylinders here. The art is gorgeous, to the point that at times I’d have to stop and bask in a panel. The first miniseries was great, but this second arc doesn’t just build on the first, it also enriches it.

The Lonesome Hunters #2 ($3.99): I haven’t had a chance to read this issue yet, but given how much I enjoyed the first, this new series from Tyler Crook absolutely had to be on my list. My expectations are high and I feel confident they won’t be disappointed.

Young Hellboy: Assault on Castle Death #1 ($3.99): Happily Thomas Sniegoski and Craig Rousseau are back for a new arc of “Young Hellboy.” ‘Assault on Castle Death’ picks up right where ‘The Hidden Land’ left off, and we get to see some of the lingering effects that tale had on Hellboy.

Hellboy and the B.P.R.D.: Time Is a River ($3.99) – Márk László returns to the Hellboy Universe in a sequel to his previous story, ‘The Miser’s Gift.’ His art lends a certain tone that works perfectly with Mike Mignola’s more chaotic story impulses. I don’t want to say too much about this one―just dive in and enjoy.

The Silver Coin #12 ($3.99): Stephanie Phillips joins Michael Walsh for the latest issue of “The Silver Coin.” This is a horror anthology series, so you don’t need to have read any other issues, but there’re things in there that reward regular readers.

Total: $19.95.

Kate’s Picks:

Ice Cream Man #31 ($3.99): The ambiguity in the solicit has me wondering all the different paths this can take, which is enough to want me to grab this issue.

Skybound Presents Afterschool #2 ($4.99): Teens and urban legends always prove an interesting mix. And let’s also not forget that the sales from this issue will be donated to Planned Parenthood, so that teens that find themselves in this situation and are worrying about a lot more than a monstrous stork have the support that they need.

She Bites #1 ($4.99): 134-year-old vampire in a preteen body? It’s such an off the wall concept, it just might work.

Total: $13.97

Johnny’s Picks:

Do A Powerbomb! #2 (of 7) ($3.99): Daniel Warren Johnson’s first appearance on my list this week is this wrestling-infused miniseries. Though I’m not a pro-wrestling fan, per se, I think DWJ makes the kind of comics I want to read – fun, exciting, and energetic.

Shaolin Cowboy: Cruel to be Kin #3 (of 7) ($4.99): Shaolin Cowboy comics are typically light on story and heavy on the art. Darrow’s pages are just jaw-droppingly detailed, you likely won’t be paying much attention to the story anyways.

AXE Judgement Day #1 (of 6) ($5.99): I’m not sure I care one way or another about this series, despite my love of all things X, but I am a huge fan of both writer Kieron Gillen and artist Valerio Schiti. So let’s give it a whirl!

The Jurassic League #3 ($3.99): I DO care, however, deeply about dinosaurs and dinosaur related fiction, especially as it pertains to super heroes. This is my catnip, right here, and marks Daniel Warren Johnson’s second appearance on my list!

Total: $18.96
