Buying comics can be an expensive hobby. A lot of fans simply can’t afford everything they’re interested in, due to rising prices and the over-saturation of the market with superhero titles.

That’s why we’re here. Every week, the Multiversity staff is asked “What would you buy this week if you couldn’t go over $20?” and shares their reasons why, in order to help others who might have similar tastes make their own decisions in buying comics on a budget. Be sure to leave your own picks in the comments!

Kate’s Picks:

Public Domain #2 ($3.99): This is certainly not the first self-referential series about the comics industry, but Chip Zdarsky’s wit makes it a cut above the rest.

Ant-Man #1 ($3.99): If all the MCU Phase 5 announcements from SDCC have you excited and waiting for Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, explore the history of Ant-Man in this new volume.

Wild Cards: Drawing of Cards #1 ($4.99): I know, it’s not the sixth Game of Thrones book, but George R.R. Martin’s take on superheroes looks interesting. And it can’t be as bad as that final season of Game of Thrones, right? Right?

Sham Comics Vol. 2 #4 ($4.00): Time to MST3K it up with some pre-Code comics!

Total: $16.97. Honorable mention to the new volume from The Nib, “The Nib: Cities.” But the bank account is still mad at me for vacation spending, so we have to keep it under budget.

Johnny’s Picks:

Superman: Space Age #1 (of 3) ($9.99): There’s a ton of really cool stuff out this week, but none cooler than the premiere issue of this mini-series written by recent Eisner winner Mark Russell and with art duties by none other than the iconoclastic duo of Mike and Laura Allred. Russell is no stranger to tackling sociopolitical ideas within the pages of his various books, and it will be neat to see this kind of treatment once again applied to the Man of Steel, as Superman reckons with a world bent on destroying itself despite his best efforts to save it. I think we’re in for a really special book here.

Total: $9.99 – but like I said – there are a ton of great books coming out this week, though they’ll bust the $20 cap pretty quickly. If you’ve got the extra coin, treat yourself to the “Ghost Cage” trade paperback from Image, Taki Soma’s beautiful collection of autobio short stories “Sleeping While Standing” from Avery Hill, or Noah Van Sciver’s new collection “As a Cartoonist” out from Fantagraphics. All three are sure-fire winners.

Christopher’s Pick:

Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow ($19.99) – I’ve really enjoyed all the maxiseries I’ve read by Tom King — “Vision,” “Strange Adventures,” even “Rorschach,” all enthralling and shocking thrillers. So I’m curious to find out what this Supergirl comic is like, especially given how dark his work is for such a sunny character — at the very least, Bilquis Evely’s art should be absolutely stunning.

Total: $19.99

Mark’s Picks:

Cinq Avril – Volume 1: The Heir of da Vinci ($7.55) – Written by Frédéric Duval and Michel Bussi with art by Noë Monin, this album follows an orphan raised by Leonardo da Vinci and his search for his true parentage. I checked out the preview pages on the Europe Comics website and I’m intrigued. Plus, I just really like the cover, so I guess I’m committing that cardinal sin when judging a book. However, it is digital only at the moment.

Total: $7.55.
