Comics Should Be Cheap (9/14/2022)

Buying comics can be an expensive hobby. A lot of fans simply can’t afford everything they’re interested in, due to rising prices and the over-saturation of the market with superhero titles.

That’s why we’re here. Every week, the Multiversity staff is asked “What would you buy this week if you couldn’t go over $20?” and shares their reasons why, in order to help others who might have similar tastes make their own decisions in buying comics on a budget. Be sure to leave your own picks in the comments!

Mark’s Picks:

Castle Full of Blackbirds #1 ($3.99): The Hellboy Universe branches out in an unexpected direction with this new series led by Sara May Blackburn as she discovers her abilities.

Young Hellboy: Assault on Castle Death #2 ($3.99): With the first issue’s set-up done, this second issue jumps straight into the fun.

Jonna and the Unpossible Monsters #11 ($3.99): We’re on the penultimate issue now. I’ve stopped reading, but I’m still picking this up so I can read it all in one go when the final issue drops. This is my favorite thing Chris Samnee’s done.

The Bone Orchard Mythos: Ten Thousand Black Feathers #1 ($3.99): After “Shadow Eater” and “The Passageway,” I was really looking forward to this series and I was not disappointed. Plus it’s really easy to like the leads when they’re both Ursula K. Le Guin fans.

The Silver Coin #14 ($3.99): There’s still a bunch of comics I’d like to pick up, but I’m going with “The Silver Coin” #14 because Pornsak Pichetshote is the guest writer, and after his contributions to “The Sandman” and “Swamp Thing,” I’m curious to see what he brings to Michael Walsh’s comic.

Total: $19.95.

Chris’s Picks:

Tragic ($17.99): Dana Mele and Valentina Pinti’s young adult take on Hamlet, published by Legendary, seems like one of those brilliant yet simple ideas that you wonder why no one else attempted it; a young teen suspects her uncle of murdering her father after his affair with her mother? The synopsis says it’s got ghosts, so at least the spirit of Shakespeare’s play is there in that respect.

Total: $17.99. I might’ve picked “The Human Target” Vol. 1 but it was over the limit.

Kate’s Picks:

The Supper Club ($14.99) : I love a good slice-of-life story, pun intended. And I also love a good coming of age story (they have a feel good tone to them, even if the topics are heavy), so this is a perfect recipe for me.

Love Everlasting #2 ($3.99): There’s a fun concept here at play, even if the execution in the debut issue was a bit messy. Let’s see if we can right the ship for issue #2.

Total: $18.98.
