Buying comics can be an expensive hobby. A lot of fans simply can’t afford everything they’re interested in, due to rising prices and the over-saturation of the market with superhero titles.

That’s why we’re here. Every week, the Multiversity staff is asked “What would you buy this week if you couldn’t go over $20?” and shares their reasons why, in order to help others who might have similar tastes make their own decisions in buying comics on a budget. Be sure to leave your own picks in the comments!

Kate’s Picks:

Stargirl The Lost Children #1 ($3.99): With the end of Stargirl on the CW fast approaching, there couldn’t be a better time for this book to kick off for those who need/want more Courtney Whitmore in their lives.

Namore the Sub-Mariner Conquered Shores #2 ($4.99): Now that y’all have seen Black Panther Wakanda Forever go out and get your fill of more Sub-Mariner stories.

I Hate Fairyland Vol. 2 #1 ($3.99): If you’re going to describe your book as “Deadpool meets Alice in Wonderland,” you have my attention. Fractured fairy tales are sometimes the best kind of fairy tales, the ones that give you more lessons than their original counterparts.

Total: $12.97

Johnny’s Pick:

Sara GN ($19.99): Though a deluxe hardcover of this 2018 original graphic novel from writer Garth Ennis and artist Steve Epting is just around the corner, newcomers might balk at the $49.99 price tag. Thanks to publisher TKO Studios, you can own a nifty softcover reprint this Wednesday. Set on the Eastern Front of WWII, “Sara” tells the story of an all-women group of Russian snipers trying to beat back the Nazi invasion. An utterly engrossing and beautiful tale, it stands as a highwater mark for Ennis’ storied career.

Total: 19.99 – I would be remiss if I didn’t mention “COPRA” which sees a 10th Anniversary hardcover reprint of the first 12 issues. Michel Fiffe’s stunning one-man-show love-letter to 80’s superhero books is a terrific ride – the type of nostalgia that stands well on its own two feet and manages to come up with new things to say about well-worn material. One of the greatest achievements in comics in the last 10 years, this book is pure, uncut fun.
