Buying comics can be an expensive hobby. A lot of fans simply can’t afford everything they’re interested in, due to rising prices and the over-saturation of the market with superhero titles.

That’s why we’re here. Every week, the Multiversity staff is asked “What would you buy this week if you couldn’t go over $20?” and shares their reasons why, in order to help others who might have similar tastes make their own decisions in buying comics on a budget. Be sure to leave your own picks in the comments!

Mark’s Picks:

Behold, Behemoth #1 ($4.99): I deliberately know very little about this series, yet I’m confident this issue is excellent. For a while now I’ve been enjoying Tate Brombal’s writing, especially his work in Jeff Lemire and Dean Ormston’s “World of Black Hammer.” Last year’s “Barbalien: Red Planet” was fantastic and this year he did “Colonel Weird and Little Andromeda” for Lemire’s newsletter—a highlight of which was a heartbreaking segment with artist Nick Robles. So when I found out the two of them were working together on a creator-owned project, I was immediately sold on the idea. Independently, they would have my attention, but together this is automatically a must buy and at the top of my list this week. The issue may cost a little more, but it’s also a longer than usual comic and absolutely worth it.

Parasomnia: The Dreaming God #4 ($3.99): This latest arc has raised a lot of questions for “Parasomnia” as it goes forward. Hopefully we’ll be seeing more of it soon.

Total: $8.98. I’ll also be picking up “Lucky Penny” (the new color edition) and “Sentient” (the new deluxe edition, which apparently comes with over 70 pages of extra material).

Johnny’s Picks:

Pink Lemonade #3 ($3.99): I really love this series. With lots of vibrant colors, fun characters, and lots of silver age-y nonsensical plots – cartoonist/creator Nick Cagnetti brings a lot of modern sensibility to some beloved tropes.

Once Upon a Time at the End of the World #1 ($4.99): Writer Jason Aaron is hit or miss for me, but generally a hit – but I feel like his real strength is finding great collaborators to work with. In the case of this book we have Alexandre Tefenkgi, who absolutely wow-ed me on “The Good Asian,” and I’m so stoked to see him back so soon after that mini-series wrapped. I’m a sucker for post-apocalyptic tales, but especially so when they have creators I love at the helm!

Frank Miller’s Ronin: Book Two #1 ($7.99): Ain’t no curiosity like morbid curiosity, I say.

Total: $16.97 – but if you have an extra 4 Benny Franks laying around or stashed in a pillow somewhere, now is the time to invest! Fantagraphics is releasing a facsimile collection of the first 40 years of “Love & Rockets” and I’m here to tell ya…it is gorgeous!

Christopher’s Picks:

Doctor Strange: Fall Sunrise #1 ($4.99): I am so behind these days, so Tradd Moore’s surreal artwork and script should be a welcome oasis in an age of uncertainty.

Star Wars Revelations #1 ($5.99): Ooh, Marvel setting the stage for future Star Wars comics I see, I wonder if Rey and Finn will be in it.

Star Wars: Yoda #1 ($4.99): “Yoda, Yo-Yo-Yo-Yo-Yoda,” anyway, who doesn’t love the original Baby Yoda? (Historian Tom Holland, but that’s beside my point.) I wonder what wisdom the Jedi Grand Master will share with us this time.

Total: $15.97
