This week on David’s Got You Covered, our look at the top covers of the week, we have a pretty light week. I try to keep this list to 5, but this week only found 4 covers that stood out to me as a reader and as a fan of covers. They are all fine examples of the art of the cover though, and you can find out what my choices are after the jump.

4. Supergirl #58
Art:
Amy Reeder

Why It Makes the List: While this is not a book I read, when I was walking the racks this cover caught my eye for a number of reasons. It’s just an engaging image, with a real effortless and joyous feel to the lines and design from Reeder. Not only that, but that very feel ties in with the characteristics of the character I know. Breezy, emotive, effervescent and a whole lot more, this image captures all of the things that people love about Kara as a character in pure form. In a lot of ways, it feels like it would have been a fitting cover for #59 as a bit of a send-off for the creative team that has escalated the quality of this book to heights it had never reached previously (according to Matt and Walt that is).

3. Osborn #1
Art:
Ben Oliver

Why It Makes the List: As if I need to give this book more praise, the cover to Osborn #1 from Ben Oliver is a creepy delight, creating a sensation of one creepy eye that follows you everywhere you go from perhaps the last man in the Marvel Universe that you want to observe you. The angle he’s looking at you from, the tilt of his head, the single eye…all of these things are cleverly designed to craft an image that makes you, the observer, feel like Osborn is looking at you from behind bars but he’s still in control. It tells a story in a single image, and when you throw in the Osborn gang tattoo on his neck (which wasn’t originally on the solicits, if I remember correctly), you have a powerful and effective image to lead off this book.

2. Batman Incorporated #1
Art:
JH Williams III

Why It Makes the List: Any time you throw JH Williams III on a cover, you’re going to have a treat. Even an image that isn’t up to his normal standards would be a cover of the week contender, but this one is a dynamic, beautiful Batman image that shows off his new costume and describes his new situation without really even getting into it. Batman has went international, and with one gorgeous image, JH Williams III kicked it off in style. This is the type of cover people would be comfortable framing if they were a big Batman fan. In a good looking book, the cover is by far the best visual of the book.

Cover of the Week goes to…
1. Morning Glories #4
Art:
Rodin Esquejo

Why It Makes the List: Morning Glories is a book that has earned an absolutely crazy amount of praise on launch. People have been climbing on top of each other praising this new Image title from Nick Spencer and Joe Eisma, and deservedly so, it’s a damn good book.

But I don’t think I’ve seen enough praise for Rodin Esquejo and his stellar covers.

Month after month, Esquejo turns out top covers, and the cover to #4 is no different. This cover is gorgeous. Looking down on our favorite put upon students as they plan breaking out their wayward compatriot, I love the way it tells the story inside of the book through one simple yet elegant image that pops thanks to exceptional character design and clever usage of light. I also love the little things that make it excel all the more – the shadow approaching on the wall, the friendly and casual wall decorations, and the plan actually being written out on the page. Everything about it combines to make it a beautiful and remarkably effective cover, which makes it my cover of the week.
