There was some big news of the digital comics variety this week! Marvel Comics are going same-day digital with their entire 616 line by March 2012. They’re already same-day with the X-men, Spider-Man and Ultimate lines, this is just spreading across the whole line. Not including the MAX line just means I’m going to be dropping PunisherMAX. It would have been the only physical comic I’d be getting every month, I suspect I’ll still read it and just start getting the trades if Jason Aaron is still writing it after this Elektra arc wraps up. With any luck Marvel will start doing the same price drop after a month that DC and Image are doing but who knows, they seem to be continually lagging behind on the digital front. The other digital news is Graphicly buying Double Feature Comics, I’m not entirely sure how this will affect things but hopefully them acquiring the Double Feature developers will improve the Graphicly iOS apps. You’re not here for news though, you’re here to read what I have to say about some books you might have missed. Want to do that? Keep on reading.
Chimichanga ($5.99, Dark Horse): I’m honestly not that familiar with Eric Powell’s work, I’ve read some Goon (not enough yet) and all I know for sure is that he’s a really fantastic artist. I decided to give Chimichanga a lot based on how much I liked the Goon I’ve read and I’m glad I did. It’s the story of a young bearded girl from a circus who finds a monster named Chimichanga, it all spirals out of control when a witch uses her beard hair to make potion that cures bad gas, then the pharmaceutical companies get involved. Sounds insane right? Sure! It is! There’s fart jokes, extremely thinly veiled critiquing of big pharma and really, really great art. It’s also a true all-ages book, it’s not a simplistic kids book but it can absolutely be read by anyone of any age.
Clumsy ($4.99 (w/ free preview)/Top Shelf, Comixology): I was only familiar with Jeffrey Brown for his Incredible Change-Bots work, I haven’t read any of his auto-biographical stuff, until now. I checked out the Clumsy preview and it’s definitely not going to be for everyone but I really love the personal, DIY feel of it. Clumsy is a collection of 1-3 page stories detailing the relationship between Jeffrey Brown and his girlfriend at the time, Theresa. It’s silly, it’s raw and it’s seemingly very honest. I would definitely check out this preview if you like auto-biographical stories and if you like it, the whole 200+ page book is only $5. That’s a bargain!
The Last Resort ($1.99*5/IDW, Comixology/iVerse): This is a bit of a cheat, it came out digitally on iVerse months ago but it just came out on Comixology and I’ve never talked about it so here we go. This is another of Palmiotti & Gray’s creator owned work, it’s their take on zombie films through a 70s b-movie lens. If you like either of those things you should absolutely be checking this out. It’s fun, it’s over the top, it’s gory and it’s sexy. You get it all with this book and at this point, Palmiotti & Gray are a must-buy for me.
This week Who is Jake Ellis came out in digital “trade”, and it’s $16.99. For reference if you buy the individual issues it’s only $10.95. It’ll be $9.95 in a few weeks when the latest issue drops in price. Do me a favour? Go try this book out. It’s really fantastic, but when you do DO NOT buy the trade because it’s priced at an absolutely insane level. I’d love for the trade to sell 0 copies because it’s absolutely not worth $7 for the convenience of not hitting “next”.
