It’s that time again to look back at the week of new digital releases, it’s a pretty light week this week (especially from the non-Comixology camps) so this will probably be a short one. Here’s what came out same-day so you can go grab it right now if you missed anything. The DC Retroactives are all out again, this week it’s the 90s. There’s also Walking Dead #88 (Image), Spider-Island tie-ins of Venom #6 and Amazing Spider-Girl #1 (Marvel), X-Men Schism tie-ins with X-Men Schism #3 and Generation Hope #10 (Marvel) and the final Ultimate Comics: Fallout (Marvel). One or more of those might show up again in the picks of the week, click on through and see which ones.
Joe Hill’s The Cape (One shot, #1. $1.99 each, iVerse/IDW): A few month’s ago Joe Hill released The Cape (unrelated to the terrible TV show) which was adapted from a short story he published back in 2005. A young adult is forced to move back in with his mother and when he finds a cape he wore as a child he ends up flying. The one-shot apparently did well enough that they’re started a mini as well. Joe Hill is probably best known (aside from his lineage) as writer of the absolutely amazing Locke & Key, which you should also check out.
Venom #6 ($2.99, Comixology/Marvel): I’m not reading the main Amazing Spider-Man book or any other Spider-Island tie-ins but I’ve been loving Venom so far and #6 was no exception. Tom Fowler and Rick Remender bring you some truly awesome moments (including possibly THE GREATEST MOMENT IN COMIC HISTORY) and I didn’t find myself so lost that I couldn’t enjoy the story. Do I know the how’s and why of Spider-Island? Not really. Did I learn enough to have a blast reading this tie-in? Absolutely.
Green Wake v1 ($1.99 x5, Comixology/Image): Green Wake #5 is out this week and ties up the first arc, so, if you haven’t checked this book out yet now’s your chance. Riley Rossmo (Proof, Cowboy Ninja Viking) and Kurtis Wiebe (Intrepids) bring a fantastic supernatural mystery in the town of Green Wake. Rossmo does an amazing job rendering the creepy, dark and confusing town along with weird frogs and monsters. I’ve been reading this in print and haven’t been disappointed yet so go get it!
Severed #1 ($1.99, Comixology/Image): Current hot writer Scott Snyder (Detective Comics, American Vampire) has become one of DCs driving forces picked to write both the new Batman and Swamp Thing series in the new DC relaunch. If you thought he’d abandon creator owned work you’d be mistaken. He’s back with a creator owned book called Severed. It seems to be telling the story of hoboes and man eating serial killers. Snyder is a master of building atmosphere and this might be the first comic touching on the burgeoning Hobo craze.
Generation Hope #10 ($2.99, Comixology/Marvel): Generation Hope is the only of the current X-Books that’s tied-in to Schism at all and brings a more human side to it. This issue looks at the events of Schism #3 from a different point of view and I believe does a much better job dealing with the emotions and general stakes of Schism in general. Tim Seeley’s art is also leaps and bounds ahead of Daniel Acuna on the main Schism book.
RASL vol 1: ($3.99, Comixology/Cartoon Books): Jeff Smith’s follow-up to Bone is absolutely fantastic. Art theft, parallel dimensions, lizard people, all under the guiding hand of one of the masters of cartooning. I really can’t recommend this enough and at $3.99 for the first volume you really can’t go wrong. Once you’ve read vol 1 you’re definitely going to want to go buy the rest of the issues available (through #11).
I was also going to talk about X-Men: Inferno but I’m too annoyed that they’re selling it as individual issues instead of one collection. There only seems to be the $75 hardcover currently in print so it’s still a great savings if you want to check it out.
Here are the full lists of comics that came out this week so you can see, and pick, for yourself (Graphicly not available)
