DJMC #11: Burn the Orphanage Mix Tape by Sina Grace and Daniel Freedman

We don’t do DJMC as often as we’d like anymore, only busting it out for special occasions. However, you just know that when we do bust it out, it’s the most special of special occasions. Today is just that.

With “Burn the Orphanage” #2 in stores today — literally right now!! — Sina Grace and Daniel Freedman’s kick-ass tribute to the sidescrollers of yesteryear returns as the titular hero Rock returns to lay down some pain on some outrageous badical baddies. Of course, the only thing that is missing from this otherwise pitch-perfect comic is some music to go with it; half of the charm of any side-scrolling videogame classic is the 8bit midi theme tunes that went along with it, and alas, comics are silent.

So today’s curated list and custom image comes from creators of the series, Sina Grace and Daniel Freedman, who have put together what is arguably the most perfect DJMC we’ve ever had in terms of thematic appropriation of music. I’m just bursting with excitement over you giving it a listen. Featuring personal favorites like Crystal Castles and Powerglove, it’s one of the most rocking installments we’ve had in this column so far.

Take it away, Sina:

The music of Burn the Orphanage has to be two things: intense and melodic. The following tracks have brought Rock, Bear, and Lex to life, and either are playing on the jukebox as a few drinks turn into a brawl, or blasting on the stereo while our heroes pump iron. With echoes to their 8-bit roots, and overdrive pedals aplenty, these tracks will definitely have you feeling like you’re ready to cruise the street for some vengeance and fun. – Sina Grace

Matthew Meylikhov

Once upon a time, Matthew Meylikhov became the Founder and Editor-in-Chief of Multiversity Comics, where he was known for his beard and fondness for cats. Then he became only one of those things. Now, if you listen really carefully at night, you may still hear from whispers on the wind a faint voice saying, "X-Men Origins: Wolverine is not as bad as everyone says it issss."
