Face Value: The Best Comic Covers of April 2018

They say you can’t judge a book by its cover. While that might be true for prose, it’s not entirely true for comic books. Comic books are a visual medium and more times than not, it’s the art that draws you in. With so many comic books coming out these days, a cover that stands out from everything else on a wall of new releases can determine how well it sells. I know that I’ve picked up new titles solely based on the cover.

It is with that in mind that we bring you Face Value, a column where we will be looking at the best covers in comics, both new and old, every two weeks. This month, we’re looking at the best of April 2018.

The Wicked + The Divine #35 by Jamie McKelvie and Matt Wilson

I’m really glad that “Wic + Div” has moved back to doing these portrait covers cause they’re some of my favorite of the series run. McKelvie has gotten so great with character expression as the years have gone by and his detail work on the characters is some of the best in all of comics.

Black Bolt #12 by Christian Ward

This is part catastrophic and part romantic and everything that makes this couple one that fans love. Ward’s work is so breathtaking and every inch of this is radiating with energy.

Eternity Girl #2 by Sonny Liew

This is the second month in a row that “Eternity Girl” lands on this list and with good reason. Liew’s work this month is mind bending and gorgeous. It’s a perfect tease of what the interior delivers.

WWE #16 by Dan Mora

Bayley as Rosie the Riveter? Perfection!

Black Hammer: Age of Doom #1 by Skottie Young

For some people, Skottie Young’s work can kind of read one note. His work outside of his kiddie Marvel covers (which I’m actually a huge fan of) is always really fun for different reasons. This cover is great because it’s clearly his signature work but there’s also this really overbearing darkness in it with a tiny touch of humor. It really works for me.

Ghostbusters: Crossing Over #2 by Sara Richard

This is a great cover but the biggest reason I added it to this list this month is because it’s very different from what we get from “Ghostbusters.” The series has been in great hands at IDW but artistically, big chances are never taken. This cover is so different from the norm and that makes it very cool to me.

Death or Glory #1 by James Harren

I don’t know what “Death or Glory” is about but this cover is so bad ass and full of action that I am compelled to find out. That’s a great cover does.

Rogue and Gambit #5 by Kris Anka

Thank you Kris Anka for constantly being you. This is so cute and romantic but also sexy without being too much.

Coda #1 by Jeff Stokely

A fantasy comic book series lives and dies by what it visually delivers and that includes the covers. This is a variant but this cover makes me want to read more. I want to be immersed in this story immediately.
