They say you can’t judge a book by its cover. While that might be true for prose, it’s not entirely true for comic books. Comic books are a visual medium and more times than not, it’s the art that draws you in. With so many comic books coming out these days, a cover that stands out from everything else on a wall of new releases can determine how well it sells. I know that I’ve picked up new titles solely based on the cover.

It is with that in mind that we bring you Face Value, a column where we will be looking at the best covers in comics, both new and old, every two weeks. This month, we look at the best covers of September 2018.

“Archie 1941” #1 by Sanya Anwar

I’m mostly unfamiliar with Anwar’s work but I absolutely love this cover. It’s so dramatic but it keeps the style of each of these characters while maintaining the time period. I know who they all are and I want to know what they’re looking at.

“Wonder Woman” #54 by Jenny Frison

This girl is on fire!!!!!!

“Dick Tracy: Dead or Alive” #1 by Mike Allred

You can never go wrong with a Mike Allred cover and his version of the yellow coated detective is perfect. I don’t know a lot about this character but his version makes me want to learn everything about him.

Shadowman #7 by Paulina Ganucheau

I really like this cover because style wise, it’s super different than anything else Valiant has going on. Ganucheau has a really distinct style and I love her different takes on this character. I want to see Valiant do more things like this.

“Oh S#!t It’s Kim & Kim” #2 by Philip Sevy

I really love this cover for the way it uses space and the softer colors that are used. It’s a really interesting in the moment scene and that’s usually my favorite kind of cover. I’d see this and need to know more.

“Batgirl” #27 by Joshua Middleton

I’ve become such a big fan of Middleton this year and covers like this are why. This is beautiful and actually makes me like this new costume a lot more. The movement here is exaggerated without being broken and the lighting is absolutely perfect.

“Mister Miracle” #11 by Nick Derington

Honestly this isn’t the best “Mister Miracle” cover of the series run but one of my favorite things that Derington has done on the series is keep Scott small. He’s not a big guy and Darkseid is a literal behemoth. I love the scale difference here and I love

“Moon Knight” #199 by Becky Cloonan

I don’t read “Moon Knight” but I’m seriously about to go buy this comic book just for this cover. It’s Moon Knight and Chthulu?? Are you serious?? Give me 5 copies.
