They say you can’t judge a book by its cover. While that might be true for prose, it’s not entirely true for comic books. Comic books are a visual medium and more times than not, it’s the art that draws you in. With so many comic books coming out these days, a cover that stands out from everything else on a wall of new releases can determine how well it sells. I know that I’ve picked up new titles solely based on the cover.

It is with that in mind that we bring you Face Value, a column where we will be looking at the best covers in comics, both new and old, every two weeks. For this month’s special edition, I’m looking at some of the very best covers DC’s Young Animal imprint gave us. With the news of it ending for the time being, I figure now is a great time to look back on some of the excellent art that this imprint gave us. I loved everything about Young Animal and I’m really sad that this is going away.

Doom Patrol #7 by Mike and Laura Allred

The Allreds’s work is like from another time and their work is always unbelievably good. Their cover for this standalone issue of “Doom Patrol” is my favorite cover of the entire series run. It’s retro and still fits so well with this “Doom Patrol” run.

Shade, The Changing Girl #4 by Joelle Jones

The madness is literally dripping in this cover. I love Joelle Jones’s work and she’s only gotten better over the last couple of years. This is really different from what she usually does and that’s why I love it.

Mother Panic #3 by Mingjue Helen Chen

Of all the Young Animal series, “Mother Panic” is the most straight forward action book of them all. Even still, this had a style all its own. This cover is great because while it is an action shot, it highlights how different “Mother Panic” is as a book compared to anything in the main line. This costume in Gotham City does stand out and Chen’s style has a touch of fun that makes it really unique.

Shade, The Changing Woman #1 by Becky Cloonan

Loma’s life is a complete mess and when you combine that with a feeling of loss and Becky Cloonan’s signature style, this is the cover you get. It’s beautiful and it’s my favorite cover that Cloonan did on her run with this character.

Cave Carson Has An Interstellar Eye #1 by Michael Avon Oeming and Nick Filardi

Oeming is one of my favorite artists in the game and I feel like he goes very under the radar. His signature style is known by most readers but in this series, especially on covers, he went all out and created some amazing images. This first issue to the second Cave Carson series is so different from the covers of the last series but that’s exactly why it works. It’s mind bending and signals a shift.

Eternity Girl #2 by Sonny Liew

“Eternity Girl” is just getting underway but already Sonny Liew has shown us has been unbelievable. This cover feels a lot bigger than it is and I love that it shows us all the different versions of Eternity Girl that might exist. It’s amazing work with an excellent use of perspective.

Doom Patrol #5 by Nick Derington

Who doesn’t love Robotman? No one. He’s a robot and a man and Derington brings him to intense life with this beautiful headshot.

Cave Carson Has A Cybernetic Eye #9 by Michael Cho

Michael Cho’s cover for “Cave Carson” is a great piece because it feels like a poster for a 70’s sci fi movie which is exactly what an adaptation of this comic series would look like. I honestly wish Cho had done more covers cause I would have liked to see him branch out even more with these characters.
