Francesco Francavilla’s Art Makes Me Want To Be An Astronaut

2001: A Space Odyssey

Before you ask — yes, normally our articles say things like “we” or “us” instead of “me” and “I”. We don’t want to be overly objective in our comments, because it distances the audience and removes the majority of any possible credibility.

But dammit, screw objectivity. I want to be an astronaut, not all of Multiversity! And Francesco Francavilla’s fantastic sci-fi pulp artwork makes wish I were out in space myself and not writing about comics on the internet. Oh, to dream.

Francavilla is quite known for his pulp illustrations, and amidst frequent Pulp Sunday illustrations as well as his entries over at What Not and Comic Twart, we (see what I did there?) spied a few space-themed illustrations awash in Francavilla’s signature color palette that are just mind-blowing. Beautifully cosmic and capturing the seductive mystery of galaxies far away and the technology found only in dreams, such as the above tribute piece to Kubrick’s science-fiction masterpiece, 2001: A Space Odyssey.

Now if only he’d do a version of Detective Space Cat. Oh, to dream some more.

Check behind the cut for a sketch of the Silver Surfer, the Planet Express Crew Tintin, a few sci-fi themed entries found on his blog and four posters for a fictional film starring Red Cooper and Steve Noonan, Phantoms of Space. Be sure to check out Francavilla’s site and Twitter as well as the aforementioned sites for more.

Matthew Meylikhov

Once upon a time, Matthew Meylikhov became the Founder and Editor-in-Chief of Multiversity Comics, where he was known for his beard and fondness for cats. Then he became only one of those things. Now, if you listen really carefully at night, you may still hear from whispers on the wind a faint voice saying, "X-Men Origins: Wolverine is not as bad as everyone says it issss."
