Friday Recommendation: New Mutants

Oh boy! It’s that time again! Friday Rec! Yes! So what shall I go with this time around?! I went with alaska IPA last time so who knows what awaits you after the jump. Go! Check it!

I enjoyed the New Mutants relaunch title. When it turned into New X-Men: Academy X I wasn’t sold on the title change, as it was so vastly different from the just finished Grant Morrison New X-Men. As they dropped the Academy X portion of the title I became fonder. Then Marvel brought in Yost and Kyle and things just exploded, literally.

After Decimation this book got really, really good as the characters were forced to mature and develop while surrounded by such dark times. The kids grew together as faced the knowledge that they were the last generation of mutants. During this time the title seemed to really draw in fans like myself and retain them. It seemed like this title was destined to be one of the best titles the X-Universe would ever spawn. While I believe it is, Marvel did not and they canceled it right after the Messiah Complex.

When Marvel canceled the title it was like watching those bus loads of depowered kids blow up all over again. I had grown so attached and now it was gone. My only solace is that some of the characters, well I guess most, show up constantly in other titles. These characters were the lucky few who didn’t vanish. Now if only we could get them back on a team post Second Coming that would be awesome!

    Friday Recommendation: Not My Bag

    By | Apr 19, 2013 | Columns

Earlier this week we got the sad news that “Li’l Depressed Boy” will be going on hiatus for a little while. To tide you over in the interim, what could be better than another Image Comic, a highly unusual one-shot from the series’ illustrator, Sina Grace? Centering on a stint working in high-end retail, “Not […]
