This week for Friday Recommendation, I’m doing something a little bit different. I’m going to list off some of the best things comics have done in the past five years or so – or rather, my favorite books that they’ve put out! And trust me; I have good taste in comics.
Take a look behind the cut for some awesome comics you need in your collection.
5. Countdown — Who’d have thought that the sequel to the first weekly DC series would be even better than the first! 52 had what seemed like everything: a great story, great art, and some of the best talent in the business. But it was missing the one thing that makes a great series even greater – Interaction with the rest of the universe! I mean, what’s the fun in reading a book if you’re not forced to pick up arbitrary books to have it make sense? If you don’t think that’s fun, then I don’t want to party with you, that’s for sure.
4. Ultimates 3 — speaking of books that lack any sort of cohesion and being awesome because of it, here you go: Ultimates 3! Always the best incarnation of the Avengers, The Ultimates know how to tear every part of you apart. Incredibly bodacious babes and canonical incest; well, why didn’t you say so? And you know that a book is good when you still have no idea what went on, even after you’ve finished it.
3. Justice League: Cry for Justice — This book. THIS BOOK. Some people criticized it for being an incoherent story with out of character portrayals told behind static art, but who needs a coherent plot when you have shit blowing up and people getting their arms ripped off?! Certainly not me, that’s for sure. My one complaint; they made me ship Captain Marvel and Supergirl and then took it away from me. That’s right. I ship it. This book was SO GOOD, mind you, and the book that spun out of it (The Rise of Arsenal) is so good, that it’s too good to be on this list! How about that!
2. Batman: Orphans — If you know me, then you know I LOVE Batman. Every book that DC puts out with a bat on it I pick up, even if the bat is incidental! That’s how devoted I am. Well, when I heard about Batman: Orphans, it was the feather in my cap, so to speak. I mean, there are more orphans in this book than you can shake a dead cat at! And if I’m ever lucky enough to write a book of this caliber, the FIRST thing I’m going to do is add a character who speaks in nothing but Michael Cera quotes – or was that Jesse Eisenberg? Oh, who can tell the difference! I’m just upset that I can’t use Samuel L. Jackson quotes without seeming like I ripped it off from this book. Plus, who doesn’t love a dead Robin? Certainly not me, that’s for sure. Plus, since this is written by an editor, you know it’s the best DC has to offer!
1. Wolverine: The Best There Is — The very pinnacle of comics right here. Not only does it feature Wolverine, one of the most underused characters in the 4 color format (and while we’re on the subject, Wolverine really is one of the most versatile characters ever), not only can he be put in death matches and paraded around on a leash, but he can ALSO cut a girls hair without her permission and she’ll LIKE it. And if that wasn’t awesome enough who doesn’t want the ability to inexplicably tear out their own innards? I know I want that!
Well there you have it. These books are the best there is, if you pardon the pun. Don’t hesitate to check them out, and tell them I sent you!
