Hype Machine: Hoax Hunters [Preview]

What do you get when you take a TV paranormal investigation team, give them the attitude of the Myth Busters and the secrecy of the Men In Black? You get “Hoax Hunters.”

Written by Michael Moreci and Steve Seeley with art by Axel Medellin, “Hoax Hunters” is a charming little title that puts three not-so-skeptic television personalities on a cross-country trek across America, investigating various phenomena as they go and covering it (usually) as falsified information to throw others off their trail. Oh, and their cameraman? He’s a disembodied Russian space suit full of crows. If that idea of a character alone isn’t enough to make you want to read more about him, then I don’t know what you’re doing reading comics in general.

Simply put, “Hoax Hunters” is an excellent book for those of you looking for an off-beat science fiction title that takes itself seriously enough to still be quasi humorous. It’s charming with instantly likable characters and strange locales, obviously opening itself rather easily for a broad and inspired future. “Hax Hunters” at most seems comparable to books like “Skullkickers” in that it can move from arc to arc with ease and accessibility, or perhaps a more lighthearted version of X-Files. While personally, I was never big on X-Files, the execution of “Hoax Hunters” is similar enough to warrant comparison and yet different enough to easily stand on its own. With sharp writing from Moreci and Selley as well as nice and clean art from Medellin, the #0 issue should’ve hooked you quite easily — and if it didn’t, the first issue of this book assuredly will.

You want visual evidence? How about a seven-page preview then?

Hoax Hunters #1 comes out July 4th from Image Comics. You can find Hoax Hunters #0 in shops now (if you’re lucky).

Once upon a time, Matthew Meylikhov became the Founder and Editor-in-Chief of Multiversity Comics, where he was known for his beard and fondness for cats. Then he became only one of those things. Now, if you listen really carefully at night, you may still hear from whispers on the wind a faint voice saying, "X-Men Origins: Wolverine is not as bad as everyone says it issss."

It’s hard to over-hype a book like “Five Ghosts”. Written by Frank Barbiere and illustrated by Chris Mooneyham, the self-published first issue caught our attention at NYCC 2012 and — much to our delight! — got picked up by Image Comics late last year. That said, the review linked in that last paragraph got a little […]

    Hype Machine: LP [Preview]

    By | Sep 25, 2012 | Previews

We’ve had a lot of words to say about a little book called “LP.” We ran an interview with artist Ramon Villalobos for Artist August and did an interview with Curt just because we like him, each of which featured little teases of the book, and I’ve done nothing but talk about how much I enjoyed […]
