In Memoriam: Mira Furlan

Mira Furlan’s introduction to US audiences was born from tragedy: a theater actress by trade, she was forced to flee her home in then-Yugoslavia after the Croatian War for Independence, when they received death threats and endured a public smear campaign for continuing to perform on all sides of the fight. She came to the United States in 1991 and, not long after, joined the crew of Babylon 5 as Ambassador Delenn. After her time on the station all alone in the night, she was the voice of Silver Sable in the ’90s animated Spider-Man TV show, became the recurring character Danielle Rousseau on LOST, and was most recently the voice of recurring character Babette in Arcane on Netflix.

I knew Mira Furlan primarily through Babylon 5 and gave a bit of a remembrance within that frame earlier this year. I lamented her loss then and I lament it now: she may not have been a large or frequent presence in the world of TV and movies, but when she showed up, you knew she was going to shine brightly and deeply. It was just who she was.

Mira Furlan was a lover of art. She believed in it and its power to help people, not as an education tool per se, but as a means of expressing and living life. Art is for the people, no matter who the people are, and it was this sentiment that she lived her life by. It was this sentiment that animated her roles, that brought such humanity to them and, in turn, inspired those of us watching.

And if you haven’t, I seriously implore you to read B5 creator JMS’s eulogy. You will cry, laugh, and learn, albeit briefly, about what a light Mira was to those who knew her.
