There are three for-sure things all people love in life: comic covers, cover bands, and MS Paint. Some warned us to never combine this holy trinity. We here at Multiveristy Comics said no, threw caution to the wind, and combined mankind’s three favorite things into our new weekly feature: MS Masterpaint Theater! Each week, we will highlight some of the best comic cover art by recreating those masterpieces in the artist’s ultimate tool, MS Paint.
Welcome to this week of MS Master Paint Theater. Before we enjoy this week’s masterpieces, let’s run over the rules again real quick.
Rules:
- Must use MS Paint.
- Must use mouse and keyboard.
- No tips, tricks, or hints.
- 1 hour per piece.
- Each piece will be rated on a scale of 1 to 10.

Masterpaint Theater
East of West #33

There is not much you can say about the “East of West” covers at this point. They are pretty iconic, well to me at least. Obviously the great sense of design utilized by a Hickman book. Having it always split with the half white cover makes for really sharp looking covers. Then to add Dragotta who is one of my favorite artists. His style is modern but evokes a very classic comic style. It has been a while since I have done a Masterpaint so I wanted to tackle a series that has some of my favorite covers. Dragotta always capture a great character shot for these covers. Not sure if its spoiler or anything so Ill just say body shape and silhouette of this figure. Having her aim and lean in a very spy movie poster pose. Dragotta’s females are always fantastic. He is great at the oval eyes and limited features. They have done 33 issues and each one is fantastic so what else can I say really. What I can do is try to recreate it in paint and ruin it. That I can do.

Mine went a little west of east. She has dead eye aim in Dragotta’s and mine is more of a lazy eye lazily lift the head aim. Which is probably fine because I am not quite sure if that is a gun she is holding to be honest. Its a purple and yellow mess. The same can be said for her hands which have merged into one super hand.
She reminds me of a thing from Dr. Seuss. Not a thing like Thing 1 and Thing 2. What are those people from the Grinch book. I realize I am on a computer but I try to be honest with you guys. Oh shit, Who people or something. Yeah, she looks like one of those. All said and done that letter work is not half bad. It actually took some maneuvering but I got it looking pretty close. Text options are limited in paint like pretty much everything else. So if we learned anything you can probably letter a comic in paint, im sure letterers would agree.
