We here at Multiversity get pretty excited about the holidays, and this year we’re sharing that excitement with the rest of you as we celebrate that wonder of wonders: THE HOLIDAY COMIC!

Each day for the next twenty-five days, and in no particular order, we’ll be featuring one yuletide yarn set to the tune of tidings of comfort and joy, and today we spotlight perhaps the most logical receiver of holiday lessons of generosity and Christmas spirit – the one and only Orange Lantern Larfleeze – in Green Lantern: Larfleeze’s Christmas Special.

Check after the cut for more on this multi-colored holiday fest.

Day #1, #2, #3, #4, #5

Who Did It? This book comes from the Santa Claus of DC, Geoff Johns, and current Teen Titans artist Brett Booth

What Is It About? When the keeper of the power of the Orange Lantern (Avarice), Larfleeze, comes to live on Earth post-Blackest Night, what’s the day he’s likely to be most excited for? As fantastic as Boxing Day is, it’s actually Christmas, the day Earth’s Guardian Santa Claus bestows all of the wants and desires upon good little…tusked alien monsters.

When Larfleeze wakes up to find his stockings empty and his tree present-less, he goes across the world in search of the real Santa Claus to make him give the presents Larfleeze so clearly deserves. Hal Jordan shows up to drop some Christmas knowledge on him, lessons are learned, magic is found.

Plus, Art Baltazar and Franco! tell a ridiculously adorable story about how Glomulus saves Christmas.

How Holiday Friendly Is It? Given that it’s mostly about Larfleeze crossing the world over to find Santa and make him give him presents, it isn’t exactly Christmas “friendly” at first. But then, through the power of forced disposal of goods and a little human interaction, Hal Jordan seems to get through to Larfleeze and make him understand the truth behind Christmas and what Christmas Spirit really is.

Christmas now means depression

Well, in the process of completely destroying Larfleeze as a person after Hal asks him to figure out what he really needs. Great job Hal, you ruined Christmas!

There’s a good story here, and a good lesson to be had for all that you can find in Christmas stories throughout time. Namely, Dickens’ A Christmas Story and its derivative Scrooged and various others of that sort.

I do have to say, nothing in the history of Larfleeze makes more sense than having the character run around hunting Santa Claus because he didn’t give him all he wanted for Christmas. I love seeing a little side adventure like this, and in a lot of ways, it fulfills my Christmas wish for the character as well.
