A big week filled with hot new releases greets us, but it’s some old stand-bys (and one of those new releases) that comprise this list. Here are the five best covers of the week.

5. X-Men #1
Art by:
Olivier Coipel

The past few days on Twitter has seen incredible praise for Coipel, as any time a book with his art comes out, it’s hard not to take notice. The guy is an absolute master of his craft, and while I wouldn’t say he’s particularly great at covers and that this cover – conceptually – isn’t really that outstanding, the execution of it in Coipel’s hands is freaking beautiful. Coipel very much quite possibly could be the most talented artist in the industry. When you’re that good, just making a cover is basically all it takes to make my list.

4. Chew #34
Art by:
Rob Guillory

This is the first of Rob Guillory’s two appearances on this list, as this cover is actually one of three covers to the book that mashes up the faces of Tony Chu, Savoy and The Vampire, the three men pushing the plot of the story and rapidly approaching each other on a collision course. Some would call it a gimmick and some would suggest cutting up your cover, but I would just call it a good cover that does a remarkable job of highlighting a) what the story is about and b) the book itself in a comic shop. Sometimes, the act of simply being different is enough to draw in readers, and this well done cover from Guillory does just that.

3. Elephantmen #48
Art by:
Boo Cook

Elephantmen is an interesting book in that it’s one of the rare few that I love almost every one of the diverse and perpetually surprising covers…yet I never buy the book. This cover from Boo Cook means not very much at all to me, besides the spin on religious iconography, but holy crap, it is outrageously well done. The detail and the design of the piece is truly stunning, and the color palette chosen makes the book stand out incredibly well. This book consistently does well with its covers, and Boo Cook’s an artist I’ve never experienced before but after this he’s certainly someone I will watch for.

2. Fury MAX #12
Art by:
Dave Johnson

Dave Johnson is an absolute master of the comic cover art form, and this is one of his best yet in his run on Fury MAX. I love the usage of the American flag as Pug’s napkin, and the way the roots from the napkin touch on all parts of the world. As this issue darkly underlines, Pug and Fury are two sides to the same coin, with Pug approaching things in a far more pragmatic, far reaching way. This cover in its own way highlights just that, and it’s just stunning work.

1. Morning Glories #27
Art by:
Rob Guillory

Fact 1: I’m a sucker for board game covers like this.
Fact 2: I love Guillory’s art.
Fact 3: I also enjoy his humor, which amuses me with his send-up of just how crazy this book often is.
Fact 4: Don’t let David wet willy you.
Fact 5: This is bar none my favorite cover this week, because it is awesome and I don’t need to explain myself to you.
