Here at Multiversity, we like to celebrate our Jewishness from time to time. Let’s face it – we don’t get to do it very often! But when we do, we might as well go all out, right? So for the Eight Nights of Hanukkah, we are going to present to you a Jewish super hero or villain that we greatly appreciate here at Multiversity Comics.

For the fifth night, we’ve picked: Magneto

Magneto is without a doubt the most famous Jew Marvel comics has in their arsenal. A Holocaust survivor, Magneto has lived a rather interesting life filled with various ups and downs that don’t always make sense to the reader. A Holocaust survivor fixated on genocide? Doesn’t 100% make sense. However Magneto has withstood the test of time in the mutant section of Marvel, becoming one of the most endearing villains to date due to his heart and compassion, which has at times led him over from the side of villainy to the side heroics, where he currently resides as a loyal member of Cyclops inner circle on Utopia.

It is impossible to be a reader and dislike Magneto, however, because he is the type of character whose personality often ends up rather infectious to us. Magneto isn’t inherently evil, and in turn he himself survived (albeit barely) through one of the most villainous eras of human history, which has in turn created the rage within him. He’s proven that given different circumstances he can be perfectly reasonable, which is not a claim that many villains can truly say. This is why he currently helps the X-Men with their current mission on Utopia rather than attempt to hinder them in the post M-Day world.

If you’d like to find Magneto, check out the Nation X arc of Uncanny X-Men by Matt Fraction and Greg Land, in which he returns once again fully powered. He is currently a large part of Avengers: Children’s Crusade, X-Men Legacy (and the upcoming Age Of X), as well as a recurring role in Uncanny X-Men.

Matthew Meylikhov

Once upon a time, Matthew Meylikhov became the Founder and Editor-in-Chief of Multiversity Comics, where he was known for his beard and fondness for cats. Then he became only one of those things. Now, if you listen really carefully at night, you may still hear from whispers on the wind a faint voice saying, "X-Men Origins: Wolverine is not as bad as everyone says it issss."
