Hello, and welcome to Saturday Morning Panels, your new favorite Multiversity column! It’s a very simple concept: since none of us are up to watching Saturday morning cartoons anymore, we are instead going to share with you our favorite panels from the week before. It’s a bit like Comics Should Be Cheap, except with more pictures and less reading.
And, of course, spoilers are probably abundant.
We encourage you to play along at home and let us know what your favorite moments of the week were in the comment section! In the meantime, our picks:
Matthew’s Pick: “Zero” #2
I’ve been following Tradd Moore’s career since he broke onto the scene with Justin Jordan and “Luther Strode,” and since then we’ve become friends. As such, I’ve gotten to see a lot of Tradd’s work throughout his budding career, whether it be pin-ups or sketches or upcoming projects and the like. The reason I frame it like this is: I’ve never seen Tradd do anything like he did in this issue. I’ve seen Tradd illustrate some amazing and incredible sequences, but this book was so packed full of art that never loses its shine or fails to hit incredibly poignant moments in a way I’d never seen him do before, and holy shit, Tradd nailed it in every sense of the word. He just gets better and better every time I see something new.
Vince’s Pick: Also “Zero” #2
This panel looks exactly like Autumn feels. It’s my favorite season, but it can also be so damn melancholy. This panel is also a wonderful thematic contrast to earlier scenes in a similar looking setting, where young Edward Zero swings from a tree with his best friend. Beautifully done, Mr. Moore.
James’ Pick: “New Avengers #11
Instead of the ominous titles Hickman uses for each chapter of Infinity, each blank page should just have this quote on it.
David’s Pick: “Buzzkill” #2
Buzzkill, a newer mini-series from Dark Horse Comics, is a book I never expected to read, let alone like. But truthfully speaking, it’s excellent, and moments like this, ones that are more quiet in the scheme of the story, are perfect examples as to why. It’s a superhero comic, but only in the darkest ways, and with exceptional storytelling all around, this should be a book people are embracing with open arms.
Michelle’s Pick: “Letter ’44” #1
No big deal, just a massive dose of spaceship porn smack dab in the middle of an already great comic. Alberto Alburquerque is killing it on this title.
Zach’s Pick: “Hawkeye” #13
Hawkeye has returned, and that’s all that matters. Also, props to David Aja for his impressive use of the the nine panel grid.
