Hello, and welcome to Saturday Morning Panels, your new favorite Multiversity column! It’s a very simple concept: since none of us are up to watching Saturday morning cartoons anymore, we are instead going to share with you our favorite panels from the week before. It’s a bit like Comics Should Be Cheap, except with more pictures and less reading.
And, of course, spoilers are probably abundant.
We encourage you to play along at home and let us know what your favorite moments of the week were in the comment section! In the meantime, our picks:
Matthew’s Pick: “Mara” #6
I have many thoughts about the finale to “Mara,” too much to put into this little panel round-up post. However, even if I have reservations about other elements, there is one thing abundantly clear: Ming Doyle’s artwork is beautiful and I want to see more of it. Now. Please.
David’s Pick: “Lazarus” #4
A lot of people really love exhaustive dialogue handling the emotional story beats. If a picture is worth a thousand words, why not use those thousand words and a picture at the same time? Well, for me, I love the economical storytelling of Greg Rucka and Michael Lark in Lazarus, a book that often dials back the dialogue and lets the true message be stated in the subtleties in the storytelling. And this section, in which star-crossed-not-quite-lovers-but-definitely-lazari Joacquim and Forever say goodbye after being attacked, is heartbreaking and speaks volumes as to the emotions Joacquim is going through and the ugly reality they are constantly tethered to. Once more unto the breach of infinite sadness. Such is the life of people designed to protect their “family.”
Sam’s Pick: Also “Lazarus” #4
Forever Carlyle kicks so much ass. Thank you team Lazarus. Michael Lark and Greg Rucka have created a truly memorable character, seen here savagely stabbing a soldier through his throat against a beautiful backdrop of crimson. In this panel from “Lazarus” #4 the violence is strangely beautiful and shockingly visceral.
James’ Pick: “Savage Wolverine” #9
Jock’s art is still oh so pretty.
Vince’s Pick: “Marvel Knights Spider-Man? #1
What is this, did I open up a House of Mystery comic or something? Nope – it’s Spider-Man – and Marco Rudy blew my mind with his varied, offbeat take on it all.
