Saturday Morning Panels (Week of 9/25/2013)

Hello, and welcome to Saturday Morning Panels, your new favorite Multiversity column! It’s a very simple concept: since none of us are up to watching Saturday morning cartoons anymore, we are instead going to share with you our favorite panels from the week before. It’s a bit like Comics Should Be Cheap, except with more pictures and less reading.

And, of course, spoilers are probably abundant.

We encourage you to play along at home and let us know what your favorite moments of the week were in the comment section! In the meantime, our picks:

Matthew’s Pick: “FF” #12

OK, this is cheating because I said the exact same thing in my Wrapping Wednesday micro-review — but, honestly, people thought this book would taper off without Fraction and it’s still great. This is adorable.

David-1’s Pick: “Sex Criminals” #1

Sex Criminals #1 is really, truly the best comic I’ve read all year. It’s astoundingly good. This doesn’t necessarily represent it best, but it is fucking hilarious and totally awesome selling of an already funny bit by Chip Zdarsky. This comic is gold people. Gold.

David-2’s Pick: Also “Sex Criminals” #1

Sex Criminals is nothing short of miraculous. Much like Teeth, it takes a look at the beginnings of sexual activity through a fantastical lens to show how isolating and dehumanising it can become in a world where genuine sex education can be frowned on. Matt Fraction is on a roll this year and this book is another gem.

James’ Pick: “Wolverine and the X-Men” #36

Future Deadpool has the perfect mix of humor and tragedy that I want in a Deadpool comic.

(“SHAME IT WAS ALL A LIE”)

Sam’s Pick: “Saga” #14

There’s something of a literary legend regarding Ernest Hemingway and his ‘six word novel.’ The legend states that at a restaurant table, Hemingway made a bet humorist John Robert Columbo and science fiction great Arthur C. Clarke that he could write an entire story in six words. They wagered ten dollars each, and Hemingway scribbled something on a napkin. After passing the napkin to both authors, they handed him $20. This was the story:

For Sale: Baby shoes, never used.

Something about this sequence reminded me of that legend, and the heart wrenching quality of that very short story.

Vince’s Pick: “East of West” #6

The Texas Ranger cries for justice, deals a killing blow across a long, gorgeously staged Nick Dragotta panel, and becomes the Judge Dredd of “East of West.”
