Saturday Morning Panels (Week of 10/22/14)

Hello, and welcome to Saturday Morning Panels! It’s a very simple concept: since none of us are up to watching Saturday morning cartoons anymore, we are instead going to share with you our favorite panels from the week before. It’s a bit like Comics Should Be Cheap, except with more pictures and less reading.

And, of course, spoilers are probably abundant.

We encourage you to play along at home and let us know what your favorite moments of the week were in the comment section! In the meantime, our picks:

“Arkham Manor” #1: Nice artistic touch. Something so simple can be so powerful. – Keith Dooley

“Arkham Manor” #1: Don’t cross Batman when he’s under added stress of having his home taken away from him. Woe be to the superstitious and cowardly lot. – Keith Dooley

“Arkham Manor” #1: This is a gorgeous homage to “Batman: Arkham Asylum: A Serious House On Serious Earth”. Very well done, Shawn Crystal and Dave McCaig. – Keith Dooley

“Avengers” #37: Oh, snap. – Matthew Meylikhov

“AXIS” #3:James Johnston

“Catwoman” #35: What has both been the most interesting, but also longest drawn-out story thread in “Batman Eternal” was paid off brilliantly in “Catwoman” #35, the first issue from new writer Genevieve Valentine. I can’t stress how intelligent this issue’s script was, setting up Selina’s role as a mob boss without resorting to the cliches so commonly relied upon in mob stories. Bravo to whoever hired Valentine. This could be the start of something special. – Vince Ostrowski

“Lazarus” #12: Everything about this panel is handled so well by Michael Lark and Santi Arcas. That Greg Rucka guy is cool, but man, no way was an issue or panel like this one as good with anyone else on art. – David Harper

“Lazarus” #12: This is the closest that Lazarus will ever get to being a Disney musical. – David Harper

“Memetic” #1: Eryk Donovan, Adam Guzowski, and James Tynion deliver huge amounts of backstory in a single panel. Look how happy they are in the pictures. Look how faded and desaturated Guzowski gives those dull, nostalgic yellows. Look at how much present day Aaron longs for this while telling himself he can figure out a way to deal. This is some ace staging. – Matthew Garcia

“The Multiversity: The Just” #1: This scene has very smart commentary by Morrison. Why should the term “comic books” have a stigma attached to it? And yes, comic book artists (and inkers, colorists, etc.) probably don’t get the compensation they deserve. Plus that little dig at hipsters is pretty funny. – Keith Dooley

“The Multiversity: The Just” #1: That’s our Damian (of Earth-16)! – Keith Dooley

“The Multiversity: The Just” #1: Those funny books are a bad influence on you, Lexie! – Keith Dooley

“The Multiversity: The Just” #1: Grant Morrison, folks. – Vince Ostrowski

“Oddly Normal” #2: Otis Frampton knows it’s never too early to introduce peeps to “Akira.” – Matthew Garcia

“POP” #3: Pop. – Matthew Meylikhov

“Secret Avengers” #9: I see what you did there! – Matthew Meylikhov

“Superman” #35: More meta-commentary from Geoff Johns? This “Superman” run might not be close to revelatory or anything like that, but it is far better than what we had been getting from this particular title since the ‘New 52’ began. – Vince Ostrowski

“Superman” #35: Ulysses: “Also, we should probably go tell Zack Snyder this.” I know I’ve made that joke before, but it was hanging right there for me. – Vince Ostrowski

“Superman” #35: Epic work by the art team of John Romita, Jr., Klaus Janson, and Laura Martin. – Keith Dooley

“The Wicked + The Divine” #5: I’m a huge fan of Baal, and this is literally the coolest and most badass action panel I can remember in 2014. Amazing. Give Jamie McKelvie and Matt Wilson a raise! – David Harper

“The Wicked + The Divine” #5: Oh gods no. – Matthew Meylikhov

“The Wicked + The Divine” #5: That’s gotta hurt! But it sure looks pretty. – Keith Dooley; SHE SAID “DON’T,” DAMMIT, WHY DID YOU! – Matthew Meylikhov

“The Wicked + The Divine” #5: The big plot twist reveal is so expertly rendered from McKelvie and Wilson. It’s breathless and anxious and just superbly executed. – Matthew Garcia

“Zero” #11: This was easily the most personal issue of “Zero” yet, and it was all the more beautiful for it. – Matthew Meylikhov
