Saturday Morning Panels (Week of 12/4/13)

Hello, and welcome to Saturday Morning Panels, your new favorite Multiversity column! It’s a very simple concept: since none of us are up to watching Saturday morning cartoons anymore, we are instead going to share with you our favorite panels from the week before. It’s a bit like Comics Should Be Cheap, except with more pictures and less reading.

And, of course, spoilers are probably abundant.

We encourage you to play along at home and let us know what your favorite moments of the week were in the comment section! In the meantime, our picks:

Matthew’s Pick: “Iron Man” #19

Ahhhhh, I see what you did there, Gillen. With Fraction, we used to play games of “Find the Mountain Goats reference” in this book, but now we have a Robyn reference from Gillen. What next? A lyric from “Robot Boy”?

David Henderson’s Pick: “Action Comics” #26

More like this, DC, more like this. This is the kind of stuff I read Superman for, not him make goo-goo eyes at Wonder Woman or throwing people through buildings.

David Harper’s Pick: “Young Avengers” #12

Young Avengers has been great pretty much the whole time it has existed with Gillen and McKelvie, but like with Billy in this issue, Young Avengers took a leap here from great to, in quoting Crush the Turtle from Finding Nemo, RIGHTEOUS! These pages here are next level awesome, as we get meta without losing the story it belongs to, with another perfect marriage of style and substance. This is brilliant comic book storytelling, and hoo boy did I enjoy it.

James’ Pick: “Secret Avengers” #12

The surprise inclusion of MODOK is usually enough to make me excited, but MODOK bringing Maria Hill cheap wine? Automatically adds Secret Avengers to the top of my pull list.

Vince’s Pick: “Deadpool” #20

Scott Koblish is one of comics’ best kept secrets. I have no earthly idea what’s going on in this panel, but I fucking love it.

Zach’s Pick: “Green Arrow” #26

I know what you are thinking, “why did he pick a panel of two giant rocks?” But seriously, look at that lighting, that water, those colors, everything about this image. It’s gorgeous! Andrea Sorrentino is terribly underrated.

P.S. The ‘Outsiders War’ trade dress rocks.

P.P.S. “We have to go back!”
