Saturday Morning Panels (Week of 2/4/15)

By | February 7th, 2015
Posted in Columns | 4 Comments

Hello, and welcome to Saturday Morning Panels! It’s a very simple concept: since none of us are up to watching Saturday morning cartoons anymore, we are instead going to share with you our favorite panels from the week before. It’s a bit like Comics Should Be Cheap, except with more pictures and less reading.

And, of course, spoilers are probably abundant.

As a note, this week features some content that is not safe for work. Please keep that in mind when reading, and don’t get in trouble with your boss if you read this column Monday mornings.

We encourage you to play along at home and let us know what your favorite moments of the week were in the comment section! In the meantime, our picks:

“Nameless” #1:
If I could, I would put every page of this book into this column. Grant Morrison and Chris Burnham weave a compelling story with this first issue and, as evidenced by these panels, Nathan Fairbairn is one of the best colorists around. – Keith Dooley

“Nameless” #1: It’s always awesome when a writer and artist find a strong collaborative style. Burnham not only has been proving he can keep up with Morrison’s Morrisonness, but he can do it in a way that doesn’t distract or draw too much attention to itself. – Matthew Garcia

“Wytches” #4: Speaking of colorists, “Wytches” wouldn’t be the same without the masterful coloring of Matt Hollingsworth. Just this page is a beauty to behold. – Keith Dooley

“Saga” #25: HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA budgets. – Matthew Garcia

“Saga” #25: That’s A LOT of piss. – Keith Dooley

“Saga” #25:
Ghüs going “What did I do?” in that issue. That’s the panel. Here’s my write-up – “Oh my god, I understand your rage Marko, but you leave Ghüs out of it, you monster!” – David Harper

“Hellboy and the B.P.R.D.” #3: Some pure Hellboy crazy. – Matthew Garcia

“Hellboy and the B.P.R.D.” #3: This is so textbook Mignola it kills me. I mean that in a good way, but it’s crazy how many things are just a signature of his work. – David Harper

“Hellboy and the B.P.R.D.” #3:
THIS IS MY NIGHTMARE. – David Harper

“Feathers” #2: I’m really all about how Corona laid out his page over here. – Matthew Garcia

“Detective Comics” #39:
Francis Manapul and Brian Buccellato sure make a dynamic duo of a team (as does Batman and Harvey Bullock). – Keith Dooley

“Action Comics” #39:
Artist Aaron Kuder and colorist Wil Quintana bring a painterly quality to a gorgeous scene featuring pals Clark and Lana. – Keith Dooley

“Superman” #38:
I yelped for joy when I saw this scene, which is quite possibly my favorite of the week. Now Clark just has to reveal his Superman identity to Lois. – Keith Dooley

“Hawkeye” #21: This. This is why people have loved this book. There are a lot of other reasons why, but Fraction and Aja’s ability to make this about a flawed person and not just a guy with a bow and arrow elevated it beyond anything with the character we’ve seen in the past. – David Harper

“Star Wars” #2: Just two issues in and these lightsaber battles have proven consistently satisfying. – Matthew Garcia
