Saturday Morning Panels (Week of 4/24/2013)

Hello, and welcome to Saturday Morning Panels, your new favorite Multiversity column! It’s a very simple concept: since none of us are up to watching Saturday morning cartoons anymore, we are instead going to share with you our favorite panels from the week before. It’s a bit like Comics Should Be Cheap, except with more pictures and less reading.

And, of course, spoilers are probably abundant.

We encourage you to play along at home and let us know what your favorite moments of the week were in the comment section! In the meantime, our picks –

Matthew’s Pick: “Guardians of the Galaxy” #2

I have impossibly high expectations for the new “Guardians of the Galaxy” book, and it’s making it difficult for me to get into the book as much as I want to. I enjoyed the Point One, but felt the first “real” issue was somewhat lackluster. With the second issue, though, even if it was still a bit underwhelming, the Rocket Raccoon moments made me smile. He’s certainly not as clever-funny as he was under the DnA-era, but this bit was still pretty funny in a macabre fashion.

James’ Pick: “Young Avengers” #4

You know, after his characterization was all wrong under Bendis, it’s nice to see Kieron Gillen and Jamie McKelvie redeem Morrison’s most under-appreciated character: Noh-Varr’s choice ass.

Scottish David’s Pick: “Journey into Mystery” #651

What does anyone need other than buff, pants-less Thor?

Vince and Zach’s Pick: “Jupiter’s Legacy” #1

After seeing this panel in the advanced review copy that we get, I knew it would be a herculean task for any other comic book to top it this week. And none of them did. I think it’s clear that Mark Millar knew what he had with Frank Quitely and wrote this sequence just for him. After all, Quitely is near the top of the heap when it comes to artists that get the comic community to turn their heads, and who else’s art would you want to see dissected in such a way in the middle of a story? – Vince

If there was ever any doubt, here is undeniable proof Frank Quitely is the best there is at what he does, and what he does is very nice. – Zach

Alaskan David’s Pick: “FF” #6

FF from Fraction and Allred (and Quinones) is a book that has a ton of heart, and no characters better show that than the Moloids. They were entertaining in Hickman’s run, especially with their Ben obsession, but Fraction has made them some of the breakout characters in 2013. This moment, when Tong decides he is actually a girl, is a touching and masterful moment, and perfectly encapsulates what makes this book so damn great.

Walt’s Pick: “The Unwritten” #48

Ask any fan of “The Unwritten” who their favorite character is and, for the purposes of this biased, fabricated adage, odds are likely they will answer “Mister Motherfucking Bun” (it’s a column, I can swear if I want). This latest arc has been particularly great because everyone’s favorite side character has finally become a part of the main narrative — and, seemingly, a pretty major part. And yet, after getting our hopes up that good old Pauly will finally join the main cast, Carey and Gross smack us with this line. I suppose it’s not that great if you don’t read the book, but it made me snort aloud, so I feel like I’m obligated to have it be my panel of the week. Of course, considering the end of the issue, it’s possible that Mr. Bun might stick around. I sincerely hope so.

Michelle’s Pick: “Lost Vegas” #2

How do you improve on a roulette-inspired layout? Why, put an eye-glowy alien face in the middle, of course. This week’s chapter of “Lost Vegas” had some flaws, but even in a less-than-fantastic issue Janet Lee’s artwork is all kinds of wonderful.

Honorary Pick: “Young Avengers” #4

Jamie McKelvie goes full-Chris Ware, and it’s a beautiful, beautiful thing.
