Hello, and welcome to Saturday Morning Panels, your new favorite Multiversity column! It’s a very simple concept: since none of us are up to watching Saturday morning cartoons anymore, we are instead going to share with you our favorite panels from the week before. It’s a bit like Comics Should Be Cheap, except with more pictures and less reading.
And, of course, spoilers are probably abundant.
We encourage you to play along at home and let us know what your favorite moments of the week were in the comment section! In the meantime, our picks –

Matthew’s Pick: “Uncanny X-Men” #6
There’s a lot to like about this spread, but if I’m being honest the thing that I think really sells it is the lettering. It’s this big grandiose moment in limbo, beautifully and grittily rendered by Frazer Irving with some funny dialogue by Brian Bendis — but when you see how the lettering is placed so closely to the characters, it really helps to isolate the moment and show you how vast and empty and hopeless their situation is. There are plenty of ways this scene could have been lettered given all the space, and something could’ve been done to attempt to draw the reader’s eyes around the page (as Bendis, who is usually very dialogue-y), is certainly aware. And that’s why VC’s Joe Caramagna is the man.

One David’s Pick: “Nowhere Men” #5
Real life lessons from giant red gorilla monster dude things. I love stuff like this.

Vince’s Pick: “The Bounce” #1
Peter Parker wishes so badly that he could say this.

James’ Pick: “Young Avengers” #5

Walt’s Pick: “Unwritten” #49
To be honest, this is kind of my anti-panel of the week. The forthcoming not-a-crossover with “Fables” in “The Unwritten” has had me biting my nails in nervousness, and for reasons beyond me not being a fan of “Fables” — come on, what does it usually mean in the cape comics world when a low-selling book crosses over with another title? Once I reached this panel, it became even harder to deny: ladies and gentlemen, I am almost certain at this point that “The Unwritten” is reaching its final act. After a bit of a slow period following game-changing issue #35, the book has been pushing forward at an ever-increasing pace, and with this one we see Tom & Company heading in a direction (or maybe separate directions) that spells endgame. Add this bit of dialogue into the mix, and it is hard to deny. It won’t be too long until we receive the post-‘The Unwritten Fables’ solicits, and it will be interesting to see what that first one says.
Of course, I could be completely wrong. Let’s hope!

A Different David’s Pick: “Unwritten” #49
Two weeks in a row, Fables is directly influencing my panel of the week. This week, it’s in The Unwritten, as Tom Taylor gets sent away from his Orphean quest and lands in the place he needs to be…Fabletown? Haven? I’m not sure, but either way, Gepetto, Frau Totenkinder and other of our Fables favorites are there to greet him. I’m very curious to see how this pans out, but I have to admit, this panel brought a huge smile to my face. Well done, Mr. Carey and Mr. Gross.
