Saturday Morning Panels (Week of 5/29/2013)

Hello, and welcome to Saturday Morning Panels, your new favorite Multiversity column! It’s a very simple concept: since none of us are up to watching Saturday morning cartoons anymore, we are instead going to share with you our favorite panels from the week before. It’s a bit like Comics Should Be Cheap, except with more pictures and less reading.

And, of course, spoilers are probably abundant.

We encourage you to play along at home and let us know what your favorite moments of the week were in the comment section! In the meantime, our picks –

Matthew’s Pick: “Morning Glories” #27

I love me a good Futurama reference.

Zach’s Pick: “Adventure Time” Annual

Am I the only one that finds this terribly disturbing?

James’ Pick: “New Avengers” #6

I would pay so much money for Jonathan Hickman to write a comic that’s just Doctor Doom screaming about how great he is.

Michelle’s Pick: “Amala’s Blade” #1

One of the wonderful things about the detailed and complex world that forms the background of Amala’s Blade is that there’s always room for a joke like this.

(It’s called the Seven Silvers Inn.)

David’s Pick: “Fury MAX” #12

Sometimes the uniform fucks back.’ Fury’s last line of this issue is remarkable, if only because it so clearly defines the character in five harsh words. The way Fury deals with maybe the only man who ever (temporarily) gets the best of him is incredible and insanely violent, and Garth Ennis and Goran Parlov expertly lay that scene out. The piece de resistance is this final line and his delivery of it, and it’s the perfect lead in to the close of this excellent and brutal series with the next issue.

Vince’s Pick: “X-Men” #1

In my review this week, I called the book “cinematic.” It’s a common word used to describe modern comics, but the word alone is not indicative of quality. My panel(s) of the week describe exactly what I mean. Coipel manages lots of simultaneous action, a good display of powers with narrative purpose, and stakes that ratchet up the tension – pretty much as thrilling as a static medium like comics can get.
