Hello, and welcome to Saturday Morning Panels, your new favorite Multiversity column! It’s a very simple concept: since none of us are up to watching Saturday morning cartoons anymore, we are instead going to share with you our favorite panels from the week before. It’s a bit like Comics Should Be Cheap, except with more pictures and less reading.
And, of course, spoilers are probably abundant.
We encourage you to play along at home and let us know what your favorite moments of the week were in the comment section! In the meantime, our picks:
“Batman Eternal” #12: It’s the part our own James Johnston was born to play! – Vince Ostrowski
“Bravest Warriors” #21: I plan to send this to all my bosses anytime I am asked to do anything ever. – James Johnston
“Chew” #42: I will never not share the gratuitous Poyo battles that come across, especially when they contain not-so-subtle references to the greatest duck dynasty of all time. – Matthew Meylikhov
“Chew” #42: There were a lot of ways this shot could have been brought to life. Rob Guillory and John Layman chose the funniest way, and I love them for it. – David Harper
“Deadly Class” #6: With every issue of this book I honestly love it more and more, and boy oh boy am I glad I didn’t have to drop the book because they hurt a random cat. Even psycho rednecks can’t resist their cuteness. – Matthew Meylikhov
“Deadly Class” #6: Given what happened immediately previous to this panel, there really was no other way to react, but that Wes Craig guy sure can nail moments of abject terror blended with utter surprise, can’t he? – David Harper
“Dream Thief: Escape” #1: Greg Smallwood is going to be a comic art star, and it’s panels like this – with the depth of the world around these characters and the hilarious expressions that really do say ‘these two guys are joking about how it’d be easier to kill a drug dealer if they had some Rambo guns’ – that cement it. – David Harper
“The Goon: One for the Road”: Oh, I’m sorry — did you forget that the fucking Goon is back in town? – Matthew Meylikhov
“Guardians of the Galaxy” #16: “Easy, sir. I’ve got you.” “You’ve got me? Who’s got you?!” Welcome to the Guardians, Carol. – Matthew Meylikhov
“New Avengers Annual” #1: So, Marvel, when can we expect that Frank Barbiere/Marco Rudy “Doctor Strange” ongoing? – Vince Ostrowski
“Saga” #20: I am a big fan of Fiona Staples’ work on “Saga,” but man, I can’t tell you how surprised I was to come to a scene like this. For better or for worse, the book operates on a rather standard comic book structure: lush splash pages, a mixture of grids and widescreen panels otherwise. Staples is great, but we don’t see her playing around with the structure too much (other than angling off borders on some panels, BSG paper style). So this? A very welcome shake-up. I’d love to see more like this. – Matthew Meylikhov
“Stray Bullets: Killers” #4: I feel like a broken record on this site sometimes, but I really can’t overstate how amazing “Stray Bullets” is and how fantastic of an artist David Lapham is. This comic is truly something else; entirely unpredictable and absolutely riveting. – Matthew Meylikhov
“Superman” #32: This is how a god lives. – Vince Ostrowski
“Superman” #32: *The chorus of “(Can’t Live Without Your) Love and Affection” blares in the background* – Vince Ostrowski
“Trees” #2: Jason, I don’t know where you were hiding this side of you (somewhere buried down deep while working in the Kirkman “house style,” I imagine), but I am so glad we are getting to see work like this finally. – Matthew Meylikhov
