This auction is now closed.

The bookcase purge for charity continues! You can see a complete list of all auctions here, in chronological order starting with the latest, here. Full auction details are included at the end of the article, but to bring the new folks up to speed real quick:

Every weekday until Friday, June 5th, we publish a new Shelf Bound article announcing a bind or bound set up for auction.

Each bind auction’s bidding starts when its article is published and ends 72 hours later, so today’s auction will close at 3 PM EST on May 10, 2020.

Bids must be posted in an item’s comment section to be considered for that item; highest bid posted before close of auction wins.

Bids from outside the U.S. are welcome, although shipping outside the U.S. may incur additional fee.

The winning bidder emails me (greg at multiversity comics dot com) to verify donation particulars, then makes the donation and send me verification.

I send out the bind.

Everyone wins.

30 weekdays. 34 binds. All proceeds going to charity. Sound good? Let’s get to it!

She-Hulk is the book that made me a Dan Slott fan. His take on Jen Walters was great, and like his run on The Thing prior to it, used her connection to multiple parts of the Marvel Universe to keep the book fresh. You never knew who was going to show up! And his use of in-616 Marvel comics as case-law records was inspired and fit right in with the 4th-wall breaking of the earlier Byrne run while not completely rehashing it beat for beat. This She-Hulk is fun, funny, and more than a little heart-breaking at times; all things I want in a straight-up superhero title.

Partnered up with Slott is a bevy of supertalented artists. From leadoff Juan Bobillo to Paul Pelletier to the always underrated Rick Burchett . . . even the reclusive Paul Smith shows up for some of the fun!

Why You Should Bid

This isn’t a bind that’s heavy on the extras. As a matter of fact, there aren’t really any extras in it at all. As you can see from the first open picture above, at least part of this book was built out of TPBs. The back half was put together from single issues, so you will run into the occasional ad. What you won’t see in that section are the covers, because I’m not the world’s biggest Greg Horn fan. I honestly find them distracting, so this book is one of the few times where I actually left things out intentionally.

At said, this book does have something to offer besides the content. It was the first half-bind I’d ever had done, where two different types of cover material are used. In this case, I went with purple & green buckram instead of the usual Arrestox we’ve seen for this binds up until now (the Arrestox colors were too off-model for this project).

Snazzy!

You may or may not be able to tell from the picture, but buckram is treated to make it tougher and more resilient to spills & other mishaps. Think old-school library books; that plastic-y fabric-y material? That’s buckram. And personally, I think H&R did a really great job with it.

So you COULD take the time & effort to track down the issues or the trades and turn them into your own book via a binder using the techniques & approaches we cover every month in Shelf Bound . . .

Greg Matiasevich has read enough author bios that he should be better at coming up with one for himself, yet surprisingly isn't. However, the years of comic reading his parents said would never pay off obviously have, so we'll cut him some slack on that. He lives in Baltimore, co-hosts (with Mike Romeo) the Robots From Tomorrow podcast, writes Multiversity's monthly Shelf Bound column dedicated to comics binding, and can be followed on Twitter at @GregMatiasevich.
