The purge for charity continues! You can see a complete list of all auctions here, in chronological order starting with the latest, here. Full auction details are included at the end of the article, but to bring the new folks up to speed real quick:
Every weekday until Friday, June 5th, we publish a new Shelf Bound article announcing a bind or bound set up for auction.
Each bind auction’s bidding starts when its article is published and ends 72 hours later, so today’s auction will close at 3 PM EST on May 18, 2020.
Bids must be posted in an item’s comment section to be considered for that item; highest bid posted before close of auction wins.
Bids from outside the U.S. are welcome, although shipping outside the U.S. may incur additional fee. Bids posted in currencies other than US dollars will be valued at their USD equivalent.
The winning bidder emails me (greg at multiversity comics dot com) to verify donation particulars, then makes the donation and send me verification.
I send out the bind.
Everyone wins.
30 weekdays. 34 binds. All proceeds going to charity. Sound good? Let’s get to it!
OK, folks, we’re gonna do something a little different to cap off Week 3. Today’s auction is for TWO binds instead of one. I hadn’t originally intended for these to go up as a set because I didn’t make them as a Volume 1/Volume 2 but rather two thematically linked but separate books. But as I got closer to putting them on here, it just made sense to have them together.

So what we have here is basically Jim Starlin’s initial Marvel cosmic stories, from day one up through the end of The Infinity Gauntlet. You get to see the seeds from which mighty comic oaks grow planted here.

The Mar-vell/Warlock Book was put together from the Baxter-paper Special Edition reprint minis Marvel put out in the early 1980s.

As a rule I will usually use this version of a comic for binding if it’s warranted and available. The paper is good quality but not overly slick or heavy and the color reproduction of these earlier era comics isn’t overly garish like modern reprints.

Plus these had cool wraparound covers I could flip for double-page spreads.

The Life of Captain Marvel, unsurprisingly, didn’t include the Death of Captain Marvel OGN. I was not about to go to all this trouble and NOT include one of the few deaths in mainstream superhero comics (differing trim sizes be damned!), so I tracked down a copy of the Life and Death of Captain Marvel TPB and snatched the OGN material from that.

As you can see above, even though he doesn’t get top billing on the spine, Thanos does show up a fair amount in this first book, so having it on hand will make sure you’re up to speed when he makes his grand return in:

This bad boy of a bind was pieced together from three different sources. First off was the Silver Surfer: The Rebirth of Thanos TPB.

Next came original issues for the Silver Surfer Stories leading into the big crossover.

And then an Infinity Gauntlet TPB to finish things off.

Why You Should Bid
This material is available elsewhere but not in the all killer/no filler combination you see here. The only book that goes from Thanos’s return to the end of IG Is the 2014 oversized HC reprint of the miniseries, and that has a ton of other superfluous crossover issues for completeness sake.
The events of the SS #44-50 leading up to IG are summarized pretty well in the mini, but considering how simpatico Starlin & Lim were as a team by this point, it’s nice to have the actual issues here as a kind of IG extended cut for folks who’ve only read the mini proper.
So you COULD take the time & effort to track down the original issues or reprints and turn them into your own books via a binder using the techniques & approaches we cover every month in Shelf Bound . . .
OR
you could bid on the bind we’re auctioning today, get the benefit of someone else doing all that work for you, AND do some good for the comics community we all love in the process!
Starting Bid: $50
