The bookcase purge for charity continues! You can see a complete list of all auctions here, in chronological order starting with the latest, here. Full auction details are included at the end of the article, but to bring the new folks up to speed real quick:
Every weekday until Friday, June 5th, we publish a new Shelf Bound article announcing a bind or bound set up for auction.
Each bind auction’s bidding starts when its article is published and ends 72 hours later, so today’s auction will close at 5 PM EST on May 21, 2020.
Bids must be posted in an item’s comment section to be considered for that item; highest bid posted before close of auction wins.
Bids from outside the U.S. are welcome, although shipping outside the U.S. may incur additional fee. Bids posted in currencies other than US dollars will be valued at their USD equivalent.
The winning bidder emails me (greg at multiversity comics dot com) to verify donation particulars, then makes the donation and send me verification.
I send out the bind.
Everyone wins.
30 weekdays. 34 binds. All proceeds going to charity. Sound good? Let’s get to it!

If someone wanted to run a Dos Equus-inspired “Most Interesting Man in the World” ad campaign centered around a comics creator, picking someone other than Jim Steranko would take a pretty strong argument. The man inspired one of Jack Kirby’s New Gods, gave Indiana Jones his bullwhip & leather jacket, wrote a history of the medium, ran a magazine, popped in & out of mainstream comics to drop innovations like the coolest Santa ever . . . and gave Bob Kane the slap in the face we all wish we could have.

The problem with getting a one-stop-shop of Steranko goodness is that he never stayed in one place all that long, in or out of comics. So his works are scattered over a variety of publishers, and in a plethora of different sizes.

So for every Nick Fury or Captain America you see here, there’s an unfinished magazine-sized “Outland” adaptation in Heavy Metal or the cover to Palladium’s Heroes Unlimited RPG or his Graphic Prince of Darkness collection that’s so tightly designed I couldn’t think of a way to include it without losing too much to gutter loss or edge trimming.

That said, I was able to find some additional b&w pinups to scan & print out, including additional images from Steranko’s Chandler graphic novel. He’s promised/teased/threatened a recolored version featuring Dave Stewart on hues for at least a decade, but so far only the few pages printed in Dark Horse Presents (below) have seen the light of day.

So while there are definitely some Steranko highlights not included in this book, I do think it serves as an interesting primer to his work and approach to comics. Plus there’s this beauty:

So you COULD take the time & effort to track down issues and turn them into your own book via a binder using the techniques & approaches we cover every month in Shelf Bound . . .
OR
you could bid on the bind we’re auctioning today, get the benefit of someone else doing all that work for you, AND do some good for the comics community we all love in the process!
