Saturday Morning Panels: Week of 5/6/2020 – Comics that Became Other Properties

Hello and welcome back to Saturday Morning Panels!

With the shutdown of Diamond Comics Distributors due to COVID-19, there won’t be new comics for who knows how long. Rather than put our column on hold, we took a page out of our Special Edition playbook and bring you our favorite panels around a particular theme.

A few weeks ago, we looked at our favorite moments from comics that started as something else first, such as a TV show or a video game.  Today, we’re going the other way and looking at comics that made that jump to TV, movies, and more!

So kick-back, watch out for spoilers, and talk about your favorites in the comments section below! And if you have an idea for a theme for an upcoming installment, leave it in the comments. Stay safe, wash your hands, and stop touching your face. (Reading a comic will help with that last one!)

“Absolute Carnage vs Deadpool” #3: It was worth it just for the look on his face. – Robbie Pleasant

“Assassination Classroom” Vol. 8: They said he wasn’t getting enough iron in his diet. – Elias Rosner

“Black Panther” #4: Is this Afro-Cyberpunk? And who do I have to make to get Daniel Acuna on a creator-owned book? – Christopher Chiu-Tabet

“Captain America” (2005) #1: Simply breathtaking – Christopher Chiu-Tabet

“Chilling Adventures of Sabrina” #6: I ate issue #9 of the series and then vomited all over the release date with my cat magic. – Elias Rosner

“DC: The New Frontier” #5: There is so much optimism in this image. I wish more stories with Hal were like this. – Elias Rosner

“Deadpool” #3: This is why Jeff is the goodest of all the good boys. #WeStanJeff – Kate Kosturski

“Deadpool: The End” #1: Should have gotten Smaht Pahk. Just ask Captain America. – Kate Kosturski

“Death Note” #16: Behold. The simple action of eating a potato chip that, when animated, becomes the most thrilling, intense, dramatic potato chip eating that TV has ever known. – Robbie Pleasant

“Descending Stories” Vol. 1: O Sensei! My Sensei! our fearful trip is done. The performance has weather’d every heckle, the prize we sought is won, The show is near, the stage I hear, the people all exulting. – Elias “Watch Showa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu” Rosner

“Green Arrow (2011)” #34: That reference: I understood it. – Greg Ellner

“Hellboy” Omnibus Vol. 2: Strange Places: Fucking classic. – Elias Rosner

“Joker: Year of the Villain” #1: This is the most terrifying thing you can say about the Joker. – Robbie Pleasant

“Locke & Key” Vol. 2: Head Games: Hell yeah they rule. Does this mean Joe Hill drools? – Elias Rosner

“Spider-Gwen” (2015b) #1: Fun fact: While it never made it into branding, the “relaunch” made her the Radioactive Spider-Gwen. As a secondary nom-de-plume, it’s not quite as fun as Ghost Spider but it’s classic Marvel. – Elias Rosner

“Spider-Gwen” #23: But look at those puppy-dog eyes. How can you force her to keep those? – Elias “Hannah Blumenreich Deserved More Spider Books” Rosner

“Superior Spider-Man” #8: I mean, she’s not wrong. Neither is Octavius, of course, but the point remains. – Robbie Pleasant

“Swamp Thing” (2012) #1: We talked about this Ivy. I’m not into bondage. – Elias Rosner

“The Mask (2011)” #2 : Give us a comics-accurate movie adaptation of The Mask where Stanley Ipkiss is an asshole who gets killed by his girlfriend in the first thirty minutes you cowards! Also, no Jim Carrey, please. – Dexter Buschetelli

“The Mask (2011)” #4 : Seriously, if you are only familiar with the movie or the cartoon (or, God forbid, Son of the Mask *shudders*) you need to check out the over-the-top violence and insanity of the original series. – Dexter Buschetelli

“What If? X-Men” #1: Gosh this one-shot got so manga at points: spin-off, now, please? – Christopher Chiu-Tabet

“X-Men Red” #9: I needed this exchange this week – Christopher Chiu-Tabet
