Saturday Morning Panels: Week of 5/20/2020 – Our Comics Quarantine Reading

Hello and welcome back to Saturday Morning Panels!

With the shutdown of Diamond Comics Distributors due to COVID-19, there haven’t been new comics. Rather than put our column on hold, we took a page out of our Special Edition playbook and bring you our favorite panels around a particular theme.

After nearly two months, new comics finally returned to pull lists this week with Diamond’s resumption of operations. Our staff kept busy during the shutdown with their own reading lists, so we asked them to share some of their favorite moments from books they read from March 25th (the last New Comic Book Day before the shutdown) through this week.

So kick-back, watch out for spoilers, and talk about your favorites in the comments section below! And if you have an idea for a theme for an upcoming installment, leave it in the comments. Stay safe, wash your hands, and stop touching your face. (Reading a comic will help with that last one!)

“Astro City: The Dark Age – 1: Brothers in Arms”: Me picking my D&D alignment, neutral or good. – Elias Rosner

“Baby’s First Deadpool Book” #1: In this parody of The Gashleycrumb Tinies, this was the only death. I demand a refund. – Kate Kosturski

“Baby’s First Deadpool Book” #1: “As a former X-Man-” “TRAINEE!” – Kate Kosturski

“Civil War” #1: Captain America was a soldier in WWII, he sure as shit wouldn’t call “Jeezus” a potty-mouth word. Fuck you Millar and your shitty event. – Elias Rosner

“DCeased: Hope at World’s End” #1: Jimmy can really pull off the whole Big Boss look, surprisingly enough. – Greg Ellner

“Doctor Aphra” (2020) #1: With the abstract art behind him resembling wings, all I could think of was: Icarus. – Kate Kosturski

“Drops of God” Vol. 22: Oof, brutal. – Elias Rosner

“Drops of God’ Vol. 22: whenyounut.jpg – Elias Rosner

“Dungeons & Dragons Classics” #9: I will find someway to work the Moonpenguin of Boof into my next D&D campaign. Somehow. – Robbie Pleasant

“Ghost Spider” #9: No, that’s a wall. Come on Cowles/Guara/McGuire, you know better than that. – Elias Rosner

“Ghost Spider” #9: Bodega Bandit is a wholesome villain and this is that good, good Spider content I crave. – Elias Rosner

“Humblewood: For Want of a Nail” #1: Well that’s a new take on giving someone the bird. – Robbie Pleasant

“Lobo/Mask” #1: I recently found a box of sketchbooks in my mother’s attic from middle school and high school. And one from age 12 had more swipes than a Greg Land book from this specific comic, including this very panel. – Dexter Buschetelli

“Ludocrats” #1: This comic is absolutely bonkers and I love it. – Robbie Pleasant

“Major Bummer” #1: If you have never bothered to read Major Bummer then all I can say is JEEZUM CROW!!! What have you been doing with your life?! – Dexter Buschetelli

“Major Bummer” #1: I always loved that Val had this weird reversed version of a boob cutout window. It’s like Arcudi and Mahnke looked at Power Girl and thought “how can we make this more ridiculous and impractical?” – Dexter Bushcetelli

“Major Bummer” #1: This crossover featured some of the absolute best sight gags and weird pop-culture reference jokes of any comic to ever include Big Head. And that’s saying something considering the character’s history.

“Mars” Vol. 4: Am I an alien? It would explain these globes on my face. – Elias Rosner
