Soliciting Multiversity: Image’s Top 10 for November 2022

While there probably aren’t many comic book blockbusters being announced for the end of the year, there are lots of interesting issues coming out. That includes a one shot from a favorite creator of mine. We’ll also check in with a couple of ongoings, and spend far too much time considering the works of one writer in particular. You’ll see.

You can look for the full solicitations on the Image Comics website.

10. Off the Rails

Gun to my head, I don’t think I could tell you what’s happening in “Undiscovered Country.” What I thought was going to be incisive and political has turned into some of the trippiest sci-fi in comics today. It’s still a book with an incredible pedigree though! I say subscribe for the vibes, and write to me if you think you can make sense of the thing!

UNDISCOVERED COUNTRY #23
STORY: CHARLES SOULE & SCOTT SNYDER
ART: GIUSEPPE CAMUNCOLI, LEONARDO MARCELLO GRASSI & MATT WILSON
COVER A: GIUSEPPE CAMUNCOLI
COVER B: JILL THOMPSON
NOVEMBER 9 / 32 PAGES SELF-COVER / FC / M / $3.99

“DISUNITY,” Part Five
As the truth of the New American Future is revealed, Charlotte and Valentina realize that in order to prevent any number of dystopian paths forward, they will have to delve deep into America’s history—and destroy some of their own as they do!

9. One More Enzuigiri

Not much more I can say about how freaking good this Daniel Warren Johnson series is. The wrestling is superb, and superbly drawn. The supernatural stuff is clever and at times hilarious (other times terrifying!). But it’s the personal drama that you’ll end up staying for, and that’s what brings this series to the next level. I mean, there’s also a wrestling Pizza Rat, and that’s very good. But this book’ll move ya!

DO A POWERBOMB #6 (OF 7)
STORY / ART: DANIEL WARREN JOHNSON
COVER A: DANIEL WARREN JOHNSON & MIKE SPICER
COVER B: MARIA WOLF
NOVEMBER 9 / 32 PAGES SELF-COVER / FC / T+ / $3.99

Lona Steelrose and Cobrasun must face a hard truth as FYSO wrestles with their own life or death situation!

8. At the End of Time

Kyle Higgins is overseeing his own little imprint at Image that I’ve seen called the Massiveverse. But I miss the days that Higgins was a scrappy writer throwing all his best ideas onto the page. “Ordinary Gods” is that strange, thoughtful Higgins book, with knotty metaphysics and ethical debate. Don’t forget to check out this sci-fi book, even if buzz on it has been a little sleepy.

ORDINARY GODS #11
STORY: KYLE HIGGINS & JOE CLARK
ART / COVER: DANIEL HDR & FRANK WILLIAM
NOVEMBER 9 / 32 PAGES SELF-COVER / FC / M / $3.99

In a space beyond space and a time beyond time, Christopher and the Warden have a conversation about the end of the world.

7. Not the Janeway Kind

With the Artemis missions making space exploration exciting again, I’ve been reading up on past NASA missions. So a new book centered around the Voyager mission sounds like a delight, even if it takes a turn into the alien sort of sci-fi. But I’m intrigued to see what a Sumeyye Kesgin book looks like. I’ve never read anything by her, but I’ve gotta see what a rising comic book creator from Istanbul thinks about the American space program.

VOYAGIS #1 (OF 5)
STORY / ART / COVER: SUMEYYE KESGIN
NOVEMBER 16 / 32 PAGES + COVER / FC / T+ / $3.99

What if one of the VOYAGER probes was found by aliens on an uninhabitable planet laid to waste by a wandering black hole? Their resources dwindling and under the thumb of a relentless tyrant, alien hero Sen’s discovery of the probe leads to adventure—and possible salvation—for her and her people.

VOYAGIS is a five-issue miniseries and star artist SUMEYYE KESGIN’s (ELSEWHERE, RISE OF THE MAGI) writing debut.

6. Final Few Wishes

Is Charles Soule over-represented on this month’s list? Almost definitely. But it’s not my fault that he’s on a hot streak (and not for the first time in his career). I’ve always loved his collaborations with Ryan Browne, and this series is their best work together yet. The contest for “best Soule comic” is pretty competitive, but believe me when I say that “Eight Billion Genies” channels all his strengths into one kickass, hilarious, disturbing, provocative book (and did I mention how funny it is?).

EIGHT BILLION GENIES #7 (OF 8)

5. Still Hating Fairies

For me “I Hate Fairyland” sort of came and went. It was something I was aware of. Something I’d always flip through, even if I wasn’t reading the latest issue. Skottie Young and Brett Bean comics are always worth looking at at least. So imagine my surprise when I discovered “I Hate Fairyland” had wrapped up… and was starting again! This book’s zany energy is moving into the real world, which sounds like a great place for a new series to start.

I HATE FAIRYLAND #1 – GEM OF THE MONTH

COVER D: PEACH MOMOKO

Everyone’s favorite green-haired, axe-wielding crazed maniac returns in this Deadpool meets Alice In Wonderland-style adventure! Gert is all grown up and living in the real world. Times are tough, and the only job she’s qualified for has her trying to find her way back to the place she hates the most…Fairyland.

4. Steel Toed Boots a Must

Man is “Skullkickers” underrated. There are a lot of D&D comics, both licensed and inspired-by, but none of those comics feel like my games. “Skullkickers” does, with it’s combination of chaos and heart. The last new issue of “Skullkickers” was in 2015! Do yourself a favor and check out this special and then when you fall in love, you can go back and read the rest of the series. Did I ever tell you that I got a great chili recipe from this book once? It’s true! If nothing else you can count on that sort of surprise.

SKULLKICKERS SUPER SPECIAL #1

ART / COVER: EDWIN HUANG & MISTY COATS
NOVEMBER 9 / 40 PAGES + COVER / FC / T / $3.99

Celebrate 12 years of skull-kicking goodness with a brand-new story of swords and sassery from JIM ZUB (Conan the Barbarian, Dungeons & Dragons) and EDWIN HUANG (Street Fighter)!

3. When Seeking Revenge…

From the solicit, this sounds like a dreamy crime thriller. That’s cool. But that’s not the reason I’m excited for this book. This book is like, the coolest team up of comic book ladies ever. Genevieve Valentine is a singular voice, so she was always going to catch my eye, but then she’s teamed up with the Great Annie Wu!? And there’s a “competing point of view” drawn by Ming Doyle? Yeah not a chance I’m missing this collaboration.

TWO GRAVES #1
STORY: GENEVIEVE VALENTINE
ART: MING DOYLE & ANNIE WU
COVER A: ANNIE WU
COVER B: MING DOYLE
NOVEMBER 9 / 32 PAGES SELF-COVER / FC / M / $3.99

Emilia and the man with the veil of smoke have set out for the ocean in a stolen truck. There’s a bloody handprint on his neck. She’s beginning to worry it’s hers.

Death and the Maiden go on a road trip. Nobody gets out alive.

A new series from writer GENEVIEVE VALENTINE (Catwoman), illustrated in competing points of view by ANNIE WU (Hawkeye, Black Canary) and MING DOYLE (The Banks, DC Comics: Anatomy of a Metahuman).

2. Swampy Temptation

I love Jonathan Luna comics, which tend towards small, personal stories against big fantasy backdrops. This one-shot looks like nothing he’s ever published. It’s a historical fantasy romance I guess? There’s demons, a sexy bog seductress, and it all takes place in Italy? And why is this story a one-shot? I’ve got a feeling this book isn’t going to make huge waves, but I’d bet you that it rules. Be the cool friend who knows about this comic.

THE KNIGHT AND THE LADY OF PLAY (ONE-SHOT)

After a war with demons, knight Signore Vincenzo is traveling home to his wife in Italy. In a swamp, he comes across a mysteriously hypnotic woman, Motta, who tempts him to stay with her.

1. Number of the Beast

I’m so sorry I’m so high on Charles Soule this month. (Kidding, I ain’t sorry). What can I do? Image keeps giving him new books, and the guy keeps crushing it. Not only that, Soule is always working with some kickass artist, making his books undeniable. The quantity of Soule’s output is matched by its quality and variety. So here we’ve got him dipping into a contemporary urban fantasy. The solicit calls this “Hellboy meets Indiana Jones.” I think it’s got shades of The Conjuring in it too. The series is drawn by the talented Will Sliney. “Hell To Pay” has all the makings of another Charles Soule Image classic.

HELL TO PAY #1
STORY: CHARLES SOULE
ART / COVER B: WILL SLINEY
COVER A: DAVE JOHNSON
NOVEMBER 2 / 32 PAGES + COVER / FC / T / $3.99

The Stones are almost free…but the devil’s in the details.

Hellboy meets Indiana Jones in this supernatural adventure from CHARLES SOULE (EIGHT BILLION GENIES, UNDISCOVERED COUNTRY) and WILL SLINEY (Spider-Man).
