It’s a new year, or at least it will be when these comics come out, so what new comics await? We’ve got plenty of new beginnings, some endings, and plenty of one-shots to start off the year. So let’s see how Marvel will kick 2023 off…

10. Lost in Space! Wait…

One of the great things about Marvel’s “Star Wars” comics is how they have plenty of time to fill the gaps between movies. It turns out that a whole lot happened between The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi, and Charles Soule is filling in those gaps with some great stories. Now we get a nice array of characters on an adventure where they’re lost in the depths of space, and that just sounds like a lot of fun as well as a good jumping-on point for new readers.

• MAROONED!
• Some of the Rebel Alliance’s best and brightest have gotten lost in an unknown region of space while hunting for a lost treasure. How will LUKE SKYWALKER, LEIA ORGANA, CHEWBACCA, LANDO CALRISSIAN and AMILYN HOLDO ever survive the horrors…of NO-SPACE?

9. The Classics Return

The original Avengers team is back, by which I mean, they’re getting flung across time, so they’re here in the present, but also the future, and also the past. Paul Levitz is making his big Marvel entry with style, bringing back classic Avengers in a literal way and setting them against Kang the Conqueror. Whatever he’s got planned, it’s gonna be exciting.

• Thor! Iron Man! Captain America! Giant-Man & the Wasp!
• The classic Avengers against the Hulk on the streets of New York! It’s the beginning of a showdown with Kang the Conqueror that will span the centuries! Eisner Hall of Famer Paul Levitz makes his Marvel debut (unless you count a letter in AMAZING ADVENTURES #5) teamed with acclaimed artist Alan Davis!

8. Get Stung

Speaking of original Avengers, what’s Janet Van Dyne been up to? She’s still around, but she’s mostly just been appearing as a side character to help out other heroes; even her most recent Avengers tenure wasn’t particularly long. So it’s great that she’s not only getting a comic of her own, but also teaming up with the new wasp, Nadia. And with Al Ewing writing for them, and Kasia Nie providing the artwork, it’s bound to be a great read.

Wasp #1 (of 4)

• Fashion designer, businesswoman, founding Avenger – Janet Van Dyne has worn many hats over the course of her super heroic career. But when an old enemy threatens Janet and her fellow Wasp, Nadia, seemingly against his will, the Van Dynes will have to confront the ghosts in their shared history to get to the bottom of the mystery.
• Join fan-favorite creators Al Ewing (IMMORTAL HULK, X-MEN RED) and Kasia Nie (MOCKINGBIRD; AGE OF CONAN: BELIT) as they celebrate sixty years of the Wasp!

7. Dare to Dance on the Dark Side?

When a hero starts trying to work with super villains to achieve a great good, one of two things will inevitably happen: either they’ll have to fight other heroes who don’t think it’s a good idea, or the villain will inevitably betray them. Well, it looks like both of the above might be happening to Daredevils Matt and Elektra, and given how everything else Chip has written in his “Daredevil” runs has been utterly excellent, we can expect nothing less here.

Variant covers by Peach Momoko and Frank Cho

• BETRAYAL!
• As Daredevil, both Elektra and Matt Murdock have made a home for super villains at the new stronghold of the Fist. But not everyone they’ve welcomed shares their vision for how things should be done. In this issue, that’s going to cost them – and put them on a collision course with the rest of the Marvel Universe!

6. Seeing Scarlet

After the Scarlet Witch was killed and subsequently revived, she’s also been off doing her own thing. Now we get to see what that thing is, as Wanda is back and ready to help people. It’s about time she got a new solo run, and Steve Orlando and Sara Pichelli are just the people to handle it. So anyone who wants to see what the Scarlet Witch has been up to (outside of the movies) should absolutely check this one out.

• THE SCARLET WITCH RETURNS!
• There is a door that appears only to those who need it most, who have no one else in the world to turn to. On the other side of this door is the witchcraft shop. Friend or foe, human or otherwise – if your need is great and your hope is gone, there you will meet the SCARLET WITCH! Wanda Maximoff is familiar with hitting rock bottom – and now that she’s finally found peace, she’s pledged all her power to help others who are languishing at their lowest. But when a woman falls through Wanda’s door with a terrifying story of a town gone mad, the Scarlet Witch will have to muster her wits and chaos magic to deal with an insidious threat!
• Comic powerhouses Steve Orlando (MARAUDERS; Midnighter) and Sara Pichelli (ULTIMATE SPIDER-MAN; SPIDER-MEN) join forces to open a groundbreaking new chapter in the Scarlet Witch’s history

5. Thor vs Thanos

Torunn Grønbekk’s run on “Thor” is certainly ambitious, with Thor and Runa fighting both Bor and Thanos. Yeah, that’s a lot. But the stakes are personal, while it still promises something that’ll shake up Marvel, so that’s a big promise for it to live up to. Can Torunn and Nic achieve that goal? Judging by their past works, I absolutely think so, and I look forward to seeing what they’ve got planned.

Thor #30

• “THE LEGACY OF THANOS” CONCLUDES!
• Torunn Grønbekk and Nic Klein continue their journey into mysterious waters! After chasing Corvus Glaive – the kidnapper of Thor’s baby sister – into a vault that requires the blood of a god to open, Thor and Rúna find themselves face-to-face with King Bor himself! And…Thanos? What dark, bloody secrets of Asgard’s past lie in this twisting, cryptic story…and what will it reveal about the future of the entire Marvel Universe?

4. Going All Out on the Avenging

Things are not slowing down in the “Avengers” comics! We’ve got more issues of the Avengers vs the worst villains the multiverse has to offer, and this time, Tony’s up against a twisted, evil version of his own father. Think he’s got father issues now? Just wait until this arc is over. But between this and the events in “Avengers Forever,” there’s a lot of action and a lot of Avengers. A whole multiverse of them, even.

• AVENGERS ASSEMBLE — PART FOUR: THE BATTLE FOR THE DAWN!
• The Avengers wage their final bloody showdown with the Multiversal Masters of Evil for the fate of prehistoric Earth and the entire Marvel Age of Heroes. Not everyone will survive. Meanwhile, Tony Stark must face his greatest enemy: his own father, the Iron Inquisitor.

3. X-Terminate! X-Terminate!

Have you been reading “X-Terminators” so far? If not, do yourself a favor: stop reading this, go get the first two issues, read them, then come back. I’ll wait.

Okay, ready? It’s so good, isn’t it!?

“X-Terminators” has been nothing but absolute fun. It’s bloody, it’s crass, and it’s a freaking blast. Five issues is scarcely enough, but if it’s to end on this issue, then I can’t wait to see what kind of insane conclusion Leah Williams has planned for us.

Seriously, read this comic.

• THE FINAL BEAT DOWN!
• These X-Ladies have been through one HELL of a night…and it’s not over yet. They might have managed to escape the trouble that found them…but that trouble hasn’t escaped them! It’s time to make these suckers regret they ever crossed their paths!

2. A Fighting Family Reunion

Speaking of comics that have been consistently fantastic, Gene Luen Yang’s run on “Shang-Chi” has been excellent from the first issue. Now that he’s claimed ownership of the ten rings (the ones more like the movie, not the Ten Rings of Power from Maklu-IV), it’s time for him to face his biggest challenge: his father. (Yes, a lot of comic book characters have father issues.) But this is a younger, less evil version of his dad, which raises a whole lot of ethical questions and timey-wimey issues. And there’s no one I trust more to handle this character and story than Gene.

• FATHER AND SON, SIDE BY SIDE?!
• Shang-Chi is lost in time and the only one who can help him is…his father?! What will Shang-Chi do when he meets the younger version of his evil parent? Will he be able to change the course of history? Or will Shang-Chi be shocked to discover he didn’t know his father as well as he thought? Find out as Gene Luen Yang’s Shang-Chi saga comes to its shocking conclusion!

1. So Very Sinister

“A.X.E.” has just ended, and we’ve already got a new event from Kieron Gillen, where he’s already set the stage for it months ago. Yes, Mr. Sinister how has his hands on Moira’s time resetting powers, and he’s using them to his full advantage. What kind of world will he create when he has infinite resets? Well, if it meets the promise of “making Age of Apocalypse look like the X-Men Swimsuit Special,” then it’s gonna be big. And given Kieron’s track record, well, this is an obvious choice for the top of the list.

• POWERS OF ESSEX!
• It’s the end of the world as we know it, and at least Sinister feels fine. For now. Can that last? Especially when we discover that he really is his own worst enemy… The universe-melting X-event begins here, in a horror timeline that makes Age of Apocalypse look like the X-Men Swimsuit Special. Join Kieron Gillen (IMMORTAL X-MEN, AXE: JUDGMENT DAY) as he kicks off the X-Men crossover Sinister has been planning since the beginning…and is going to have to see through to the bitter end.
