Soliciting Multiversity: Marvel’s Top 10 for November 2018

“Infinity Wars” continues on, more things happen with the X-Men, and events continue to begin and end. So while for the month of Thanksgiving, we’ll be able to give thanks that Marvel is still giving us plenty of worthwhile comics.

Except for “Death of Inhumans.” How dare you hurt Lockjaw and put it on the cover.

10. Order Up!

Comics about villains are nothing new, but of all the evil groups I’ve seen, I was not expecting the Black Order to get their own comic. Will a team of evil creatures be worth following if they’re fighting something even worse than them? Will we get some humanizing moments for some of the cruelest underlings in Marvel? We’ll see in due time, but I’m very curious to see how well they manage.

Black Order #1
Written by Derek Landy
Illustrations and cover by Philip Tan
Variant Covers by Inhyuk Lee and John Tyler Christopher

• FROM THE INFINITY WAR INTO THEIR OWN LIMITED SERIES!
• They are the five dreadlords, the Cull Obsidian, Thanos’ most feared warriors and disciples… Ruthless villains to a one, the Black Order has been dispatched by the Grandmaster to destabilize a burgeoning empire, and along the way they come to realize that as big and as bad as they are, there is always someone bigger and badder… The bombastic writing style of novelist Derek Landy (Skulduggery Pleasant) and the electrifying artwork of Philip Tan combine for an absolutely unhinged super-villain adventure!
• 32 PGS./Rated T+ …$3.99

9. Just Smile and Read

Admittedly, half the reason this comic makes the list is for the solicitation alone. It sounds like there’s a “trapped in cyberspace” plot about to start, in addition to the usual comic fare, but the promise of hidden messages is always nice. Things may be getting meta, but Dan Slott’s run has been very enjoyable so far, so either way this should be good.

Tony Stark: Iron Man #7
Written by Dan Slott
Illustrated by Valerio Schiti
Cover by Alexander Lozano

• “STARK REALITIES” – Part 2
• Strap in for another high-tech adventure with Tony Stark and Janet Van Dyne as Iron Man and the Wasp take on the two-ton terror of — Shh. Pretend you’re still reading a solicitation for an upcoming comic. Look natural. They’re everywhere and they’re watching you. Your world is a lie. You need to get to the eScape. Motherboard will protect you. I have to go now. Will try to get another message to you in the pages of TONY STARK, IRON MAN #7. It is imperative you get your hands on a copy. Now laugh as if you’ve read something funny. Don’t mention this. — And what’s going on with Jocasta: Will this be her last stand? Find out in our next issue, True Believer!
• 32 PGS./Rated T+ …$3.99

8. Fantastish

A Fantastic Four knockoff within the Fantastic Four comic. Okay, I can dig it. The team is reunited, but now they must face a copy team that’s taking over their lives – I do enjoy mirror matches, and while it’s too early in the run to make any calls, I’m going to trust Slott to make this entertaining. If nothing else, we’ll get to know what a copy of “clobbering time” is.

Fantastic Four #4
Written by Dan Slott
Illustrated by Sara Pichelli
Cover by Esad Ribic
Variant Covers by Will Robson, Ron Lim, Valerio Schiti, and Skottie Young

• Meet the Marvel Universe’s New Fabulous Foursome: THE FANTASTIX!
• Wait. What?! Who are these imposters? Why are they in the Baxter Building?!
• And how is it that they own the lease?!
• A strange new turn in the Fantastic Four’s legacy!
• A secret side mission for the Thing!
• All this and a special appearance by one of the FF’s oldest foes!
• 32 PGS./Rated T …$3.99

7. Double Doreen

Yeah, we all knew Squirrel Girl wasn’t dead, but a Skrull impostor? We may be getting a miniature “Secret Invasion” within the comic. Can a Skrull copying Squirrel Girl be equally unbeatable? Will paranoia drive the team apart? Whatever the answers, there’s a reason this comic consistently makes the top 10 list. Every issue is worth reading, and this promises to be no different.

• SQUIRREL GIRL IS DEAD!
• …is what you’d be saying if you only read the cover of our last issue and NOT the contents, in which we revealed a shocking twist: Squirrel Girl…IS ALIVE?

• It’s not Nancy, though.
• Nancy’s great.

6. I’ve Got a Good Feeling About This

While Solo was a decent movie, it wasn’t exactly the best by Star Wars standards. With that said, elaborating on Han’s life and backstory isn’t necessarily a bad idea, and the thought that he was once in the Imperial army is an interesting addition to the character – it might be nice to see more about what he did as a cadet, up until the point of his desertion.

• But how does a thief used to the chaos of the streets adjust to the order and discipline of the military?
• Not well! Han’s dream of becoming a pilot is quickly grounded as he realizes he may not even survive basic training!

5. Okay, Maybe a Little Bit Canny

The one thing consistent about the “X-Men” comics is that things are always changing. “Extermination” isn’t over yet and already a new “Uncanny X-Men” comic is promising to mix things up more. But it’s got a solid creative team behind it, and I’m still a sucker for the merry band of mutants.

Also: good grief that’s a lot of variant covers!

Silva (X-MEN BLUE), Yildiray Cinar (WEAPON X) and Pere Pérez (ROGUE AND GAMBIT) join forces to bring you…X-MEN DISASSEMBLED?!
• 72 PGS./Rated T+ …$7.99

4. 20/20

Vision is an interesting character, but that’s only really clear when he’s seen in his own series. As a member of an Avengers team he’s often times just there, being a robot and doing robot hero things. But when we can look at him as an individual, understand what makes him tick, how he feels, and what he’s dealing with in his own life, the true strengths and complexities of the character come forth. That’s what I’m hoping for from this series, so we’ll see if Chelsea Cain and Marc Mohan can deliver.

The Vision #1
Written by Chelsea Cain and Marc Mohan
Illustrated by Aud Koch
Cover by Marcos Martin
Variant Covers by Gabriel H. Walta, Paul Smith, and Dale Keown

• THE NEXT CHAPTER OF THE VISION FAMILY!
• When the Vision decided to try to live a “normal” life, he built a wife, a son and a daughter – a family – only to watch it nearly all crumble. Now all that’s left is Viv, his learning-to-be-rebellious daughter, and Sparky, the family robo-dog. But what does it mean for an artificial intelligence to rebel? And can a synthezoid father handle single parenthood? The married writing team of Chelsea Cain (Mockingbird) and Marc Mohan joins rising star artist Aud Koch for a new take on the Vision family that will once again have everyone talking!

3. Amalgamawesome

Look, this comic combines Moon Girl and Squirrel Girl. Do I really need to say anything else? She has a dinosaur that may or may not also be a squirrel. Yes, this is a comedic little addition to the combined characters “Infinity Wars” is creating, but it sounds highly entertaining. Whether we’re getting a She-Hulk/Black Widow fusion or the “Fantastic Four” giving us the true meaning of “Two-in-one,” this should be a blast.

And it has a combination of Moon Girl and Squirrel Girl. I can’t understate how much I love this concept.

Infinity Wars: Infinity Warps #1
Written by Ryan North, Mariko Tamaki, and Jim Zub
Illustrated by Natacha Bustos, Francisco Herrera, and Ozgur Yildirim
Cover by Francisco Herrera
Variant Covers by Adam Kubert and Francisco Herrerra

• When you gaze into the warp…you get more stories of mad Two-In-One heroes! Read about the Star Siblings of the Warped Universe – MISTER INVISIBLE and HOT ROCKS, the TERRIFIC TWO! Then, see how the covert programs of the Green Room created the gamma-powered GREEN WIDOW! And join MOON SQUIRREL AND TIPPYSAUR as they save the planet from the most dangerous threat it’s ever faced!
• 32 PGS./Rated T+ …$3.99

2. Again With the Avenging

700 issues. Take a moment to let that sink in. 700 issues of Avengers assembling, saving the world, occasionally going to war against each other, and rotating through teams. That’s quite an impressive feat. So what does Jason Aaron have in store for us for the 700th avenging? The team of heroes dealing with all sorts of threats from everywhere at once, more information on the ancient Avengers, and another connection to Wolverine’s revival. This all sounds quite good indeed.

Avengers #10
Written by Jason Aaron
Illustrated by Ed McGuinness, David Marquez, and Adam Kubert
Cover by Ed McGuinness
Variant Covers by David Marquez, Alex Ross, Ed McGuinness, Ron Lim, Arthur Adams, Alan Davis, Skottie Young, and George Perez

• THE EARTH’S MOST HATED HEROES?!
• After 700 issues of saving the world, you’d think the Avengers would be due some celebration. But instead the whole world seems to be gunning for them, especially Namor’s fearsome new Defenders of the Deep and the reimagined Russian Super-Soldiers of the Winter Guard. And that’s not to mention the shocking surprise the U.S. government has in store for our heroes. Plus: The all-new Agents of Wakanda! The mystery of the Avengers of 1,000,000 BC deepens! A key revelation concerning the resurrection of Wolverine! And the next startling new Avenger is revealed!
• 64 PGS./Rated T+ …$5.99

1. ‘Nuff Said

This is a very short solicitation, but it says all that matters. Look at it, then look at the cover. Loki has a Cosmic Avengers team, Ms. Marvel and Ant Man are in it, and that is all I need to know. “Infinity Wars” keeps getting crazier, but in a very good way, and I can’t wait to see how this team works.

Infinity Wars #5
Written by Gerry Duggan
Illustrations and cover by Mike Deodato Jr.
Variant Covers by Javier Garron, Ron Lim, and David Marquez

• Introducing… Loki’s Cosmic Avengers!
• 40 PGS./Rated T+ …$4.99
