The watchful and completely objective gaze of Soliciting Multiversity now falls upon Marvel’s crop of titles for October! Spooky. Check out our picks below and let us know what stuck out to you in this month’s solicitations in our comments section.

10. Ridin’ Solo

One of Marvel’s upcoming titles is “Solo”, a spin-off from the “Deadpool & The Mercs for Money” series about… some guy? I’ve been following the Duggan run on Deadpool pretty consistently and even wrote reviews for both volumes of “Mercs for Money” and I’m still not totally sure who this guy is. He’s the most indistinguishable character on a team that has Stingray. And not to kick a dog while it’s down, but I have no idea who would want this book. I have no clue who would read this year’s “Deadpool” comics and think “Yeah the third guy with guns shoud have a series. No, not Foolkiller, the other one.”

The “One Man War on Terror” will get the job done! That’s right — James Bourne, A.K.A. Solo, is on his own, right where he belongs! Deadly alien weapons are making their way into the hands of ordinary thugs – and Solo is going undercover to locate the source. Things are heating up, and Solo might just wish he had some backup! Deadpool was just the beginning. You haven’t seen anything till you’ve met Solo!

9. Big Lake

If you’ve got no clue who the Great Lake Avengers are, here’s a quick rundown. Remember the Justice League Detroit? Congrats, you now know the GLA’s deal. Even though I’m sort of over the idea of a “World’s Worst Heroes” shtick, there’s two things I can dig about this new series. First of all, Will Robson’s art is always a delight. And second, I like the idea of the GLA coming out of the woodwork because Squirrel Girl’s getting successful and they’re just trying to leech off her newfound popularity. That’s the kind of conflict I’d want to find out about. Plus, I want to know what the deal is with the guy dressed as Christmas Elf Penn Jillette.

“All New, All Different?” No, thank you! New things are bad and different things are scary! Instead, why not join everybody’s least favorite super-hero team, the Great Lakes Avengers in their brand new — but not too brand new — ongoing series, Same Old, Same Old, Great Lakes Avengers! When the team gets reinstated as permanent members of the Avengers and uprooted to Detroit, the GLA has one more shot at super hero glory…but can they answer the call? Do they even have 4G coverage here? Find out!

8. Doctor Strange & The Up To Somethings

Is Wiccan joining up with Doctor Strange and a bunch of other of Marvel’s magic heroes in order to tap further into his growing powers? Done, sold, see you in October. The solicit says that one of the wizard’s Strange is teaming up with will betray him and honestly there’s not a chance it isn’t Merlin. You don’t just say “Hey, Merlin’s here” and have that not lead to a bunch of consequences.

7. Quantum Man

Hey look, a new hero! An actual new hero who isn’t A) a new incarnation of a prior character or B) a plot device for a crossover. How lit. Mosaic (Morris Sackett) lost his body somehow and now lives on by possessing other people. I’m super into that but only if we’re not just rehashing Deadman. If Sackett can just exist outside bodies as a ghost than he’s not really a superhero he’s just a, well, ghost. But if he is just constantly jumping form body to body like he’s on Quantum Leap that’s at least something new for Marvel. I can’t wait to enjoy Mosaic for a few months until he gets sucked into the rest of the “Inhumans” stuff and I lose track of him.

6. Alias Investigations is Back

This was pretty inevitable. With the large number of fans Jessica Jones gained after her Netflix series (which I really liked even if I wanted her to fight anyone besides Killgrave for like one episode). And I’d get really excited for this comic… if it were written by 2001 Bendis. The original “Alias” is great but we’re not dealing with the same writer we were fifteen years ago. “Civil War II” is happening and is kind of a mess. “Spider-Man” got really awkward real quick and I’m really not excited by his work on Iron Man. Maybe “Jessica Jones” can be as good as “Alias”, but everything else Bendis is doing at the moment is making me hold my breath.

5. Spider-Crossover!

Hey Spider-Man’s getting another crossover. It took like two years for us to get over “Spider-Verse” so I’m looking forward to the next three years of books with “clone” in the title.

“Clone Conspiracy” is ging to revolve around the return of The Jackal, the Spider-Man villain responsible for the “Clone Saga”. I’m all for a new take on The Jackal since he could be so much more than a guy in a fur suit obsessed with cloning everyone in Peter Parker’s life. Maybe he’ll look at a picture of Venom and be like “Oh yeah, I could’ve been cloning these and not Aunt Mays for the past two decades.”

4. Maiming of the Shrew

There’s an obvious reason I’m putting this comic on the list and it’s not that I’m excited to see “DEadpool” continue that whole beef he’s got going on with Madcap. No, “Deadpool” is getting a Shakespearean style back-up story. There’s one thing I like more than Shakespeare and it’s being an absolute snob about comic books and theatre. This is going to be the worst review ever published on Multiversity Comics. If this comic isn’t in iambic pentameter but in some bullshit “fancy Shakespeare” talk I’ll blow an actual gasket in the real world. If “thou” gets used incorrectly, I’ll actually file a class-action lawsuit against Marvel.

DEADPOOL #21

“IT’S NOT A TUMOR” STARTS NOW!
You can’t keep a good Madcap down! First, this massively oversized issue brings you the return of Deadpool’s greatest nemesis. He’s back (in the most horrific way possible) and he’s out for revenge! Then, say hello to SHAKESPOOL, THE MERCENARY OF VENICE as Deadpool goes Shakespeare for an all-new 60-page tale by Ian Doescher (William Shakespeare’s Star Wars series). Those old plays you were supposed to read in English class just got a lot more interesting. Don’t say we never taught you anything!
96 PGS./Parental Advisory …$9.99

3. Daddy Doom

As part of Bendis’s latest work on “Iron Man”, Doctor Doom has… ??? He kind of just showed up to check in on some demonic possession Iron Man and his friends were going through and immediately peaced. Now, a few months later, he’s taken over as Iron Man for reasons that will be explained. Maybe he’s really turned a new leaf and he figured dressing up as another hero was better than keeping to that Von Doom name. I kind of hope this just ends up being a panel-for-panel rehash of “Superior Iron Man” where Doctor Doom launches an app that upsets his friends before a universal reset wipes the entire series out of relevance.

32 PGS./Rated T+ …$3.99

2. Young Champions

It’s not the Young Avengers but I’ll take it. “Champions” is going to feature Ms. Marvel, Nova, and Spider-Man realizing the Avengers are sort of bonkers and doing their own thing with Hulk, Viv Vision, and Teen Cyclops who somehow has not been sent back to his own time yet. It’s been four years, X-Men. Clean up after your time travel mess. Also, Vivian from “The Vision” is going to make her first appearance outside of that wonderfully horrific comic which is also coming to a close this month. I kind imagine Vivian isn’t going to bring some kind of baggage to this team, especially since her dad blackmailed the hell out of Nova. Maybe Mark Waid will write the first few issues before Tom King shows up and turns everyone’s life into another unescapable nightmare.

1. CAGE!

Remember Samurai Jack? Of course you do, you’re on the internet. The dude behind that (and Dexter’s Lab and Powerpuff Girls and) has been trying to get his Luke Cage miniseries out forever and now it’s finally happening. Fans of Tartakovsky know how well the man knows to depict fight scenes (seriously watch Samurai Jack) and that’s something he’s going to bring to this 70’s inspired romp. This is one of the few comics that I can get excited for without any qualifiers.

He’s CAGE! and he’ll save your behind. Dig it!
