THello and welcome to Multiversity’s look at the “Best of the Rest,” where we try to summarize what’s coming your way from pretty much every other comic publisher besides Marvel, Dark Horse, DC, and Image this October 2018.

Get your pull lists ready, it’s time to see all the other stuff going on in comics.

10. If You Hadn’t Judged Me, I Wouldn’t Be Out Here in the First Place

Cover by Mark Buckingham

Suit up and roll out for this latest Judge Dredd adventure, released through IDW. Paul Jenkins takes the reins with Marco Castiello into this subterranean Mega-City One thriller.

Judge Dredd: Toxic #1
Written by Paul Jenkins
Illustrated by Marco Castiello
Published by IDW

Celebrated British writer Paul Jenkins takes his first shot at Judge Dredd! The death of a genetically modified toxic waste worker leads to a startling discovery that fuels anti-immigration fervor and threatens to spill over into the streets of Mega-City One.

Cutting satire and gritty action from writer Paul Jenkins (Hellblazer, The Inhumans) and artist Marco Castiello (Star Wars)!

9.Too Much Perfection is a Mistake

Cover by Jose Ladrönn

Alejandro Jodorowsky is an . . . interesting personality. He’s done more with his comics work than ever with his movies, finding a medium that suits his eldritch imagination. He’s worked with some of the most accomplished artists in the world. His work has ambition and vision and it’s often incredible. But there’s always a dirty feeling I have when I read his stuff, like grungy and unsettling.

In any event, this is a sequel to his film, El Topo, which was surreal and absurd. Jodorowsky often finds more coherent stories in his comics work so I’m interested to see how this will turn out.

Sons of El Topo: Cain
Written by Alejandro Jodorowsky
Illustrated by Jose Ladrönn
Published by Boom! Studios

Legendary filmmaker Alejandro Jodorowsky (The Incal, Metabarons) and virtuosic illustrator José Ladrönn (Cable, Incredible Hulk) deliver a sequel to Jodorowsky’s cult classic film, El Topo.

El Topo was once a bandit without limits, a man with no moral compass, until his journey through the desert brought him to religion and enlightenment. As he became a holy vessel imbued with the power to perform miracles, he left behind his first born son Cain, and brought forth the birth of Abel.

Fueled by resentment, and unable to kill his saintly father, Cain begins the slow pursuit of his half brother in a tale of magic and mayhem.

8. Dimensional Fantasias

Cover by Claudia SH Iannicello

The enormously popular fantasy series makes a jump to comics. This looks like it’s an adaptation of the first novel in the series (which I read and it was fun, though I sort of lost all interest in it once I learned it was a series instead of a standalone thing) which lived by Schwab’s visual descriptions. I think the more visual medium might help deliver an even more arresting story.

And, if it’s an original story, I think it’d be interesting to see how Schwab’s world is ultimately rendered.

Shades of Magic: The Steel #1
Written by V. E. Schwab
Illustrated by Andream Olimpieri & Enrica Eren Angiolini
Published by Titan Comics

The highly acclaimed YA fantasy series comes to comics with its original author: award-winning New York Times bestseller V.E. Schwab! In a gaslamp world where magicians navigate alternate Londons, the prince of Red London pursues a dark version of his beloved city – and faces worse than exile…

Sumptuously illustrated by Andrea Olimpieri (Dishonored) and Enrica Angiolini (Warhammer 40,000).

7. Time Capsule

Cover by Rachael Stott

There’s a new Doctor and with her, a new comic to commemorate her appearance.

Doctor Who: The Thirteenth Doctor #1
Written by Jody Houser
Illustrated by Rachael Stott & Enrica Eren Angiolini
Published by Titan Comics

The Doctor regenerates into her most thrilling incarnation yet – played by Jodie Whittaker, and traveling alongside three brand new companions: Graham (Bradley Walsh), Yasmin (Mandip Gill), and Ryan (Tosin Cole)!

Experience mind-blowing challenges and dynamic adventures through time and space – right alongside the Doctor and her friends!

A new series for a new era on the TARDIS, from a creative team of astounding women – Eisner-nominated writer Jody Houser (Faith, Mother Panic, Star Wars: Rogue One, Spider-Man: Renew Your Vows, Orphan Black, The X-Files: Origins), art by Rachael Stott (Doctor Who, Motherlands, Star Trek/Planet of the Apes) and colors from Enrica Angiolini (Shades of Magic: The Steel Prince, Warhammer 40,000)!

6. Hardboiled Wonderland

Cover by Billy Tucci

Dynamite takes another crack at the legendary character in this new series. I think the character is more famed for her creation — Torpé Mills created the original comic strip under a male pen name in order to get her work out there — than for her latest adventures. That cover’s kind of gross but I’m about the idea of a riff on Inglourious Basterds with these classic comic strip characters.

Miss Fury #1
Written by Billy Tucci
Illustrated by Emma Kubert
Published by Dynamite Entertainment

The debut issue marking the return of one of the most influential characters in Comics History comes this October with “Miss Fury – Joy Division.” Multi-Eisner nominee Billy Tucci (Shi, Sgt. Rock) and rising star Emma Kubert recapture the legend of the original “Cat Woman” Marla Drake and her army of “Black Furies” that take readers from the warring skies above NYC and into the heart of Hitler’s Third Reich in spirit of an all-female “Inglourious Basterds.”

5. Master Class

Cover by Floyd Gottfredson

Fantagraphics offers up this best of collection of Gottfredson’s Mickey Mouse strips. These are all great adventures, filled with economical, assured cartooning. For this collection, Fantagraphics has colored everything (instead of just the Sunday strips). I hope it’s a Technicolor marvel.

Mickey Mouse: The Greatest Adventures
Written by Floyd Gottfredson
Illustrated by Floyd Gottfredson & Merrill de Maris
Published by Fantagraphics

Fantagraphics is celebrating 90 years of Mickey Mouse’s adventures by assembling the best stories from its 14-volume Floyd Gottfredson Mickey Mouse series, but this time in full color! See Mickey race to a Wild West gold mine with Pegleg Pete, battle the Rhyming Man for an atom-smashing machine, and stop a hypnotist from hexing half of Mouseton. In this spectacular popular edition there are several extrawild, extra-beloved adventure stories in beautiful modern color.

4. None. More. Goth.

Cover by Francesco Francavilla

I think the IDW “Star Wars Adventures” comics are the best Star Wars-related comics being released right now. And, in the spirit of the season, they’re going out for a weekly series of eerie tales. In some way or another, it sounds as if these stories revolve around Vader’s incredibly Gothic castle on Mustafar. And if Vader shows up being all extra, all the better.

Star Wars Adventures: Tales from Vader’s Castle #1
Written by Cavan Scott
Illustrated by Derek Charm & Chris Fenoglio
Published by IDW

Tales from Vader’s Castle puts a spooky spin on your favorite characters from a galaxy far, far away…

This exciting weekly series explores the hidden corners of the Star Wars universe and features Rebels stars Hear, Kanan, and Chopper; Obi-Wan Kenobi and Count Dooku; Han Solo and Chewbacca; the Ewoks; and of course, Darth Vader -all under the shadow of Vader’s Castle!

Fans will be excited to discover these creepy stories by fan-favorite writer Cavan Scott with art by the greatest talent from across the galaxy, including Derek Charm, Kelley Jones, Chris Fenoglio, Corin Howell, Robert Hack, and Charles Paul Wilson III!

3. Historical Moments

Cover by Nate Powell

Time is a flat circle. History repeats itself. Evil we thought we defeated 60 years ago continues to rear its ugly head in its last dying breaths. It can be defeated again, it just takes work.

Run Book One
Written by Andrew Aydin and John Lewis
Illustrated by Afua Richardson
Published by Abrams Comicarts

Told in multiple parts, Run is the next chapter of civil rights history after the March saga, bringing to life the true story of John Lewis and many of his colleagues in the movement after the historic success of the Selma campaign. Days after the Voting Rights Act is signed into law, the Ku Klux Klan mounts its largest hooded protest march in years. Events such as this are a dangerous reminder of the external forces in our society assembling to undo the hard-won protections at the ballot box, forces who have studied the tactics of the movement and are now prepared to weaponize them. Powerfully necessary in these times, Run Book One is the story of John Lewis’s struggle to lead the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC), one of history’s most important nonviolent organizations, as it loses the support of much of the federal government and many of its most important allies. How can SNCC, an organization built on consensus, integration, and nonviolence, survive in the face of powerful disagreements over black political power, white inclusion, the war in Vietnam, and the role of nonviolent civil disobedience in the movement? Run is the story of loss, and in the ashes of John Lewis’s role in the civil rights movement, he finds his future in public service.

2. Beloved Space Gays

Cover by Tillie Walden

Walden really outdid herself on this one, with its complicated storylines and gorgeous space visuals. The webcomic was great but I think art tends to live and breathe on paper, so I’m excited to see it become tangible.

1. Mathematical!

Cover by Jorge Corona

I’m never sure how I feel about shows continuing on in comic form after the series has ended but Boom! has done well with their “Adventure Time” comics. Also, Ooo is big enough that there’s plenty of space to explore. So I’m hopeful. Also Adventure Time.

Adventure Time: Season 11 #1
Written by Sonny Liew
Illustrated by Marina Julia
Published by First Second Books

Cartoon Network’s award-winning animated series Adventure Time will conclude this fall with Season 10-but this October, KaBOOM! proudly continues telling the stories of Finn and Jake in a new Season 11 comic series!

In the aftermath of The Great Gum War, Finn, Jake and the entire land of Ooo begin to pick up the pieces with some new and unexpected friends.

Written by Eisner Award-winning writer Sonny Liew (The Art of Charlie Hock Chye) and illustrated by Marina Julia (Lumberjanes: Faire and Square), this is the only place fans can get new stories in the land of Ooo!

Well, that was fun! And let me know what books YOU’RE excited for in the comments section.
